Hi everyone,

Just signed on to the forum and new to the bolt action world.  I just picked up a Remi 700P LTR 20" in 308 and now looking for rings and a scope.  I also have a Badger 0MOA base.

My budget is a $1000, but if I don't need to reach that limit, I'm all for that.  I'm planning to use this primarily at a range that is max'd out at 400 yard targets, however, I would like the ability to shoot to 1000 if possible.  I know my base is not 20moa, but it is what it is.  There is a chance that I will take this rifle hunting, but it's not anytime soon.

My main concerns for scope are glass quality/clarity, durability, reliability, and it has to be in Mils.  Not quite sure on FFP vs. SFP yet, and I know for FFP scopes, there are only so many that fall within the $1000 price point.

I've actually been looking at the SS 3-15, which have some terrific specs, but I'm not sure how the brass turret set column would hold up in the long run.  I'm very much open for suggestions and recommendations from you all.

Thanks!

Thats a new one i have never heard anyone be concerned about. I wouldnt put to much concern into that. The SS line is designed for extreme durability even for .50 cal. I dount your .308 will do mucj to it

I believe this person is eluding to the 3 friction set screws that hold the turret locked down, versus the 1 in the center of the turret, like the SS 3-9x and others?

You're correct, it's the brass stem that I'm concerned about.  I'm actually hoping that it should be of no concern at all.

I also saw those DEMO-A ones on the sample list for a $100 off the retail.  Seems like a great deal.  How do those sample scopes work with regards to warranty?  Also, would it be worth waiting for a holiday sale, like Black Friday or Labor Day?

I'd snatch it up while they are there, friend. They won't be for long. Warranty is good to go. No worries.

The turrets are good to go also. My old 10x SS has the same turrets and has been spun, drug, banged, etc and is still 100% perfect.

At that price its hard not to go that route it will hold up well and they hold their value well so you can later trade up to a 5-20x50 if you want to.  Buy good quality rings and go shoot it.

Thanks for the feedback guys.  I came across a sale of another SS scope over at Sniper's Hide, which is now throwing a curve ball at my decision making.  Someone is selling an SWFA SS HD 5-20 (non-illuminated) for $1100 shipped.  It's been lightly mounted (not torqued), and never shot with.  He's had it for almost a year now.  Wondering if this is a good consideration and if warranty is transferable.

Thanks!

Yes, the warranty transfers.

If I may be so bold.

I think your getting "over scoped" with the 5-20x. Matter of fact, the SS 3-9x should meet or exceed all your aforementioned shooting needs. You really want a 5x on the low end for hunting?

I have virtually the same rifle, (VSLH .308 20" barrel), share the same shooting scenarios and have the SS 3-9x.
I've never felt under scoped.

I have to agree here.  I would not go over 3x on the bottom end.  The 3-9 or 3-15 would be a better choose IMO.  I have a SPS tac with a barrel I cut down to 16" and it wears a SS 3-9.  Never felt the need for more. Actually sometimes wanted less than 3 but I lived.

With my SS5-20, the reticle was a bit small at 5X, as are most FFPs scopes in that mag range.  One of the things I love about the 3-9 is that the reticle is always very usable.

And I too would avoid a 20X optic on a gun that will mostly see 400 yards or less.  A 9X will get to 1,000 yards, and a 20X is way too much scope for a 400-yard gun.  I shoot much better with a 12-15X top end than I do with a 20X top end, mostly because a perfect sight picture is easier to get.

Okay I'm sold.  I just picked up the last SS 3-15x on the Sample List.  Now I need some rings and a way to calm the excitement.

What do you guys think of Seekins Precision rings? I'm guessing with my 0 MOA cant base, 42 mm obj. lens, that I can use low rings to get it close to the barrel?  Any recommendation on height?

Thanks again!

Seekins rule....LOW will work perfectly. That's what I use with my SS 3-9x.

Forgot to ask if you think these would clear the objective with the Butler Creek cap?
