So my dad asked me if I was going to use my rifle for muleys in Wyo. this year... (thinking, well hell yes, 7mm sako with 3x18x44 z5 BT set up for a max 600yrd shot... I can put three shots in a silver dollar at 300 and put a three on a paper plate at 600) (duh!)

I politely said "yeah it shoots pretty good, and that turret takes some guess work out of longer shots"

So he replies, oh I thought you were going to take that new M70 fw in 270, and I would just use yours! LOL

I guess that's a hint.

I need a scope, $800-1Kish. Minimum magnification of 15x (considering 25x) I would like a custom turret option. Elevation adjustment to get me out there if need be.  Not against used from the sample list. I was planning on a HD5, possible a VX3 or VX6 with cds. (not a big fan of leupolds) and after searching new post on OT, the Vortex HD LF. (I like the idea of the smaller 42 obj but not against a larger one)

I don't think the Vortex HD LF has a custom turret, I might be able to like the G4bdc, I just don't know how precise the bdc will match ballistics.

Any suggestions from the experts?

If I got an illuminated reticle with a custom turret, that would pretty much blow my dads mind, and I just might get my sako back for this years hunt! LOL

You have a dad problem, you don't have a scope problem. Bandito
Just a thought: if you shoot an elk 700 yards away, that's an extra 1,400 yards that you would have to drag, carry, and pack.

I am really impressed with Razor HD LH scopes I am looking at, so for what it's worth you should consider them.

I am not sure if Kenyon makes custom turrets for them, but the tracking is spot on.

I just found out that Kenton Industries makes a turret for my Sightron SII Big Sky 3-12x42 (which I bought from SWFA from recommendations).

My dilemma is, how much better is the VX6 or the Razor HD LF compared to SII BS? Are they a serious step up from the Sightron?

Another question is, how difficult is it to put those turrets on the SII BS? Would I have to ship it for the install? I haven't even researched it yet.

lol Dad not a problem, but I didn't plan on lending him my rifle, I think its awesome that someone who has been shooting 50 years with kentucky windage is not so stubborn to see the benefits in a more modern idea.

The great thing about custom turrets is they are spot on - for one very specific set of circumstances; the bad thing is if any factor changes, you are back to tracking minor variations from the turret markings, which is a real zero vs a permanently etched zero.

And don't even think about a significant temperature change or elevation change or even a modest barometric pressure change at range - else your custom turret is all wrong.

For these reasons, I prefer a mil reticle (christmas tree is preferred) and log book.  With that, I can track true zero and changes to that zero due to factors and their known effect on bullet flight.

Inside 500 yards, it isn't that important.  Beyond 500 yards, it is absolutely vital.

And if you are taking 700 yard shots on game without a Kestrel weather station, I'll flat-out call it unethical.  I am a decent long range shot, and I carry a log book (specific to ammo, gun, and conditions) and a kestrel into the field.  A bad wind call at 700 yards is an un-recovered, wounded animal that dies slowly and badly - all because you couldn't take the time to get the wind right.
