Seems like this yr has been more search than hunt. On our lease this yr we had an outbreak of cow horns. And there seems to be a six point theme as well. We decided to cull most of the cow horn to prevent breedin an epidemic. The six pointers we hope will mature into a few good one. Then there is the usual spikes and 4 pointers. Also most all the better bucks I've caught on camera are movin from 10pm to 4:30am. The doe are movin pretty good but so far none have been seen being persued by the bucks. But after countless corn and camera locations I finally located a couple pretty good bucks. A large bodied young 8 pointer and a real nice 6. Got those pics couple weeks ago and decided to see if I could catch one of em in legal shootin hours. Went a few times last week and saw nothing but squirrels and crows. Tried again last Wednesday and a couple young doe came in and went out in about ten minutes. Decided to try it yesterday and finally "pay dirt"! I figured if anything good showed up it would be last light. I got in the stand at 4:00 and legal shooting was over at 5:42. this is a 60 ac field planted in winter wheat backed by a large wooded swamp perfect for holdin some good bucks. Its a good stand for getting in undetected cause there is a island of trees around a old cemetery about 200yds from the wood line. I have the corn and camera in the left (Northwest) corner of the field so the sun sets behind me. Its a ladder stand that is fairly comfortable so I settled in for a short wait. 4:30, 5:00, 5:30 nothing but fat squirrels. 12 minutes left, discouraged, thinking about callin it a day but I'm here might as well wait and see if anything really does show up last minute. I'm glassin everywhere to make sure I don't miss anything and check the time, 5:41. Well one last look at the corn. Wait a shadow. I'm carrying my Sendro 300wm topped with a Ziess D-V 6x24-56 so I get the rifle up and on target. I can see the form real good but its too dark to make out antlers. But its movin like a buck. I've only got seconds to make a decision. Go for it!!. It takes 4 or 5 steps into the field and stops Its not a good angle at all. It turns back toward the woods and walks back to the edge. I know time is runnin out. Come on dude give me a shot!!! It turns back to the field and gives me a quartering to me shot, base of the neck thru the opposite shoulder. Steeaady, breath, squeeeeeze boom. I listen for the pop of the 168 Berger and "YES!!! a solid hit. I grab the binos to see if it ran or dropped.
Down! right in its tracks. Its about 180yds and I can't tell anything about the deer so I start the hike of discovery. What have I just tagged??? I get to a short corner just between me and where it is layin and ease over to check with the binos. Its laying there and there is something stickin up pretty high over it. Is that antlers??? Whoaaa!! it is antlers. Its been about 5 yrs since I've taken a good buck and yesterday was a really good day. A six pointer 20 1/4 wide and weighed in a just over 170 (big for around here). In some ways he's probably my best trophy to date.

.
Well guys, with me, enjoy my good hunt.

The pics just don't do it justice.
