With our hunting season approaching rather fast, I have re-placed (as in putting it back on)my Leupold3,5-10X40 on my Sako 300H&H.
This rifle has undergone some major surgery over the last few years. It now sports a new lefthand stock, action bedded with aluminium pillars and a new barrel The latest addition was a Timney trigger.
I have struggled extensively to get 200gr Nosslers to give a good grouping. Bullet length seemed to play a vital role.
I have loaded the bullet with a 90mmOCL and 69,4grS385. This is 2,4gr over the max on the chart. The speed has not been chronographed but it must be around 2850ft per sec, maybe more.
After sighting the scope and being satisfied with the groupings, I shot this 3 shot grouping, adjusted the scope up 3 clicks and one click left. I shot the two shot grouping, which is printing nicely 2 inches high at 100m. I immediately packed up and will never touch this rifle or scope again, other then to shoot and clean it. Sold
Bring on the kudu!!!!

Good to hear, 8!  I remember the difficulties you had in getting this combination to shoot.

Thanks for all the words of encouragement. Yes, I was going to ditch the Noslers if they carried on misbehaving. One point, I have stopped over-cleaning my rifle barrels. I hardly use copper solvents, only Shooters Choice.
I am of the opinion this has helped "stabilize" the barrel, but will never know. Only my opinion.
Glock, nice to hear from you. No I have not tried the GS Custom bullets. I have heard a lot of good things about them.
We are planning to go to Willowmore for a couple of days for a real old fashioned hunt. Rough it up stuff, sleeping in a tent or old sheep shed, cook over open fire and walk the mountains for kudu.
Then we have a gemsbok and springbuck hunt planned near Kimberly.
We have also been invited to a springbuck cull in Namibia, but this has not been firmed up yet. This would be a bonus as they need to shoot about 800 springbuck.
We may also go to Bedford in the Eastern Cape for fallow dear, kudu and impala.
But hunt we will hunt.
What do you have planned?

Heh 8shots I just asked about the GS Custom as I rememeber you saying that you tried a monolithic point in another post. We are going to Fauresmith (Jagersfontein) for Springbok,Gemsbok and Mountain Reedbuck, Pongola for Impala and Warthog and then to Thabazimbi hopefully for my first Kudu. Yes I know shock and awe, no kudu yet.  I'm confined to a wheelchair so in 13 years the closest I have come, is just to get the crosshair on an extremely big bull, but wouldnt take the shot as there was just to much branches in front of the fitals. You know what Kudu's prices are like, apart from the fact that I despise wounding any animal.

Regards Chris

Hey 8shots, being a new guy here it looks like your in the southern half of the continent of Africa. My sister got to hunt in South Africa a couple of years ago and shot a gemsbok. Just wondering, what are the typical ranges for the type of game you mentioned above, and what are the prefered cartridges for them?

Glock, sounds like you have some good hunting lined up. Good luck on your kudu. It may be a personal thing, but I will not use monolithics in the medium bores for hunting. I was referring to accuracy with the GS.

Beltfed, yes, I am in South Africa. Distances can vary considerably, that is why a flat shooting .308 caliber is normally the best. 30-06, 300Winmag etc. But all cal are used and the merits of each is discussed for hours, with no final conclusion.
I use a 300H&H to good effect with 200gr bullets. I have taken Kudu from 10yds to 600yds.
Typically one expects to shoot between 100yds and 250yds.

8shots I actualy get really good accuracy in my 30-06 with Barnes 180gr TSX 3 shots into 13mm, and a few friends use the GS Custom with really good results. Must say Good Luck to you too with the hunting, hope to see some pics.
