I was swapping hunting stories with a buddy last night. He told me this story:
He was hunting in rocky terrain, when he fell and badly dented his scope. It then also started to rain, but he carried on hunting. He never had an opportunity to shoot. The next morning, before leaving camp, he looked through the scope, and the whole thing was fogged up. So he forced off the ocular lens, held the scope over an open gas flame from the stove. He steadily dried it out. He put the whole thing back together and re-zeroed it. No problems. He hunted another 3 days like that, only picking up a tiny spot of condensation. He shot his animal quota.
On his return he sent the scope to the manufacturers, with a full explanation. They virtually re-build the scope for him. New tube, o-rings, ocular housing etc. A detailed bill arrived, with zero charge!
The scope and company: Lynx Optics, South Africa. Their service is on par with Leupold, maybe better.

But the real story, who has done such field repairsand managed to save the hunt???

That's interesting, I luckily have never had to do this. I hope I never do have to.

I have seen the Lynx website. The scopes look almost identical to the Sightrons.  Anyway, that is great service!! Smile  --Ed

The only field repair I have seen with a scope was to my brothers nose when my Nikon smacked him in the face. Not once but twice on the same trip. He is still ugly as all get out but his nose is a little straighter. I didn't charge him anything for the nose job ether I was laffing at him to hard.

I have heard of a guy who hunted with us taking a scope that lost zero and hitting in on a tree and it went back to working right. I have no truth to it but thats the story.

I did a different one. I used to hunt with iron sights only. On this particular hunt I could not hit jack squat. Eventually I was stalking a impala ram, which saw us and ran off. I was working out how to retry the stalk, when my guide said" It does'nt matter, let him go, you will miss him anyway!"
It was mid Sat, I raced of to the nearest town and bought a scope and mounted it, zeroed it and by that afternoon I was hunting again. Shot a nice kudu before sundown!!!!
I have been using a scope ever since. (that particular scope was a Tasco 1,5-5x20. I thought I would buy a small scope to give the game a sporting chance!! I have come a long way in optics since then!!!)
