Oh well, if we get to throw those in. . .
In a 1000yd BR rifle, I think I would choose a BAT.
In a custom tactical rifle, I think I would choose one of the customs(there are a few) with a built in 1 pc. scope base, Rem 700 type trigger, nice big recoil lug and a detachable magazine.
In an Africa Rifle, the Empire action looks tops to me. If I had to do it on a budget, the Montana action looks very nice for this too.
For a custom walking hunter rifle, I can't see anything better than the Sako 75.
For a discounted version of any of these, Savage actions are not far behind. The available triggers and scope bases are making them closer. Sure a Remington can be modified to be pretty darn good, but Savage has designed out some inherent inaccuracies or the Remington design.
Features I prefer in a varmint/long range hunting/tactical action: - fixed ejector(easy to control brass exiting, also case is not pushed offcenter into the chamber) - M16 type or Savage type extractor(easy single feeds) - detachable magazine for quick reloads at the ready. - Rem 700 or Savage 10 style trigger for lots of aftermarket choice. - rough match to Rem 700 or Savage 10 shape for good stock choice. - easy bolt removal. - easy to use/reach three position safety - one piece integral picatinney base or availability of quality 1 pc bases. - big bolt knob
My Savage 12 does all of this well enough for me right now. Now how do I explain to my wife that my $600 rifle needs a $3000 USO scope? Edited by nksmfamjp |

I am pulling for those Wbys., but still love that Remington action, or for that matter the Tikka, oh well, the Savage, oh the Vanguard, Ruger, Howa, hmm., you know. I just love bolt action rifles. I find something good in all of them. Had to edit. Even though, I read an update, Oh I am reading again, DC will not like me for that, I do not think I would like the Mossberg, but for those on an extreme budget, it shot well in the re-tests. But, I have not handled the rifle. Edited by Dolphin |

I'm really intrigued by that new T/C Icon rifle / action. It has some really nice features and I like the overall looks of the gun.

BAR! So damn fun to shoot and accurate enough for what I do. Have a 30-06, .308 & .243. the .243 is almost like shooting a .22 as far as recoil goes. I wish they offered it in a .260 with the synthetic stock..... talk about the perfect kid/smaller stature Whitetail rig. I do need to have some trigger work done though....... didn't really notice this too much until I got the Savage Accu-triggered 11FL for the kid.
Only problem with the Savage is that I need to send it back and have the spring in the magazine adjusted....it will only feed properly with 2 shells. If you put in more, the front of the shell dips and hits the wall preventing it from being fed into the chamber. And their safety SUCKS!!! |

take em!

The main thing I don't like about Savage actions is the fire control system -- the bolt release doubles as the sear, a huge stamped sheet metal pivoting gizmo. I have to admit, they make some really good barrels; one of the few mfgs that still button rifles their barrels, and they offer the best accuracy for the $ anywhere. I've found their heavy barreled varmint rifles will generally shoot! Out of the box, they seem to outshoot most of their competition and do so for much less money. I just don't like their trigger group design and some other detail type stuff, but otherwise, they offer a great value for the money!

I second that. I just got a new issue of guns and ammo and there is a good article in there about the T/C Icon. |

I like the butter knife bolt handle, something you don't see at all these days. On top of all the other important factors that will make it a solid rifle. $800 isn't all that bad either. http://www.tcarms.com/firearms/icon.php Edited by jsethmor |

I like the feel of the Sako. However, I also really like the "cock on close" of a Enfield as well.

I like alot of actions for different reasons but if I had to just pick one it would be the Mauser Magnum.

A trued & blue printed 700 is tough to beat. But the Lawton & Surgeon actions are incredible, they are just pretty expensive.

The only problem with a trued and blueprinted 700 is by the time you spend the $ to have the work done, you would have spent about the same money as a custom action, and you'll still have a trued factory action from the standpoint of resale value. You can get a Stiller Predator, Borden Alpine, Nesika T Hunter, etc. which are direct drop-in replacements for the Rem700 for the same price or not much more $ by the time you factor in all the costs. You won't have to do any trueing/blueprinting of these actions, they will fit the exact same footprint as the Remington, and they'll have better resale value if you ever decide to sell it later. Sako 75, the most accurate rifle I have owned untouched from factory specs. Second pre-64 model 70, then any original 98 Mauser action (CZ550) The Mauser will work always..

Just bolt actions? I'll take a Browning High Wall or Ruger # 1 for looks, strength and 4-6 more inches of bbl length
with the same OAL. |

by far - the M995 sako action - it's the one used in their TRG sniper weapons -
it's an awesome action for a hunting/sniper rifle.

rootmanslim, if you like single shots, take a look at the Dakota model 10. As far as my favorite action, I really like the Husqvarna 1900 or the 8000/9000 as it is referred to here in the USA. I have not felt a smoother bolt action as far as factory actions are concerned. Unfortunately, they are no longer imported here. When I'm setting out to build an accurate hunting rig, it will be based on a Remington 700. It's very simple to build an accurate rifle based on the Remmy platform. Tons of aftermarket parts available (triggers, 3 position safeties, firing pins, bottom metal options, bolt shrouds etc.) and making them shoot more accurately is about as straight forward as it gets. |
