I have always read that one advantage to a 30mm tube was additional adjustment range. There must be other factors because my Leupold M8 Compact 2.5 X 20mm 1" tube scope has 147" of adjustment which is more than a lot of 30mm "tactical" scopes. Am I correct in assuming that magnification power and/or objective diameter also affect the adjustment range?

Duh - you are comparing a 2.5  power M8 with say a Leupold 8.5-25 Mark 4 Long Range Tactical and saying you have more MOA adjustment -- well of course you do but you do not have the same magnification so the size of your field of view at 100 yds is different than the 25x field of view. If you want a realistic comparison the scopes must be the same power and the only difference be the 1 in tube vs the 30mm tube in such a case the 30mm has more range of adjustment.

Magnification affects angle of view the higher the magnification the narrower the field of view.

Objective affects how much light comes in and a 42mm objective at 6x yields a 7mm exit pupil and is considered a very bright scope in low light.  As the power goes up the larger the objective would need to be to afford the same exit pupil. On the flip side anything over about 40mm is a little bulky and more clumsy than the smaller scopes.
