I am not familiar with the higher end spotters...

If I get a deal on a Swarovski body and then read about great Pentax eyepiece in a magnification I'm looking for do they work together?

There's a couple of Swaro eyepieces on the Sample List. If I pick one up now am I committed to shopping ONLY for a matching Swaro body? Will it work on a Kowa?

I am not reffering to these examples specifically.

Seems that 1.25" is a standard of some sort.

What can y'all tell me?

I'm not an expert or a currentpert, but I am a pre-pert. The 1.25" eye piece is a standard for telescopes, and I know the Pentax 80 and 100mm spotting scopes use 1.25" eye pieces and can use any standard telescope eye piece, however I do not know if this is a standard for the higher end spotting scopes. I'd like to know the answer to this one too.

The answer for this differs depending on which scope and which eyepiece you're talking about.  Many, if not most high end scopes are only compatible with the same manufacturer's eyepieces specifically designed for that scope.  Pentax eyepieces will not work with Swarovski scopes, but Pentax scopes are adaptable to a wide variety of eyepieces.  That's one of the selling points of Pentax scopes.  However, I do believe there is at least some Kowa eyepiece / Swarovski scope compatibility based on some discussions on other forums I've read on digiscoping with Kowa long ER eyepieces on Swaro scope bodies.  I am not certain of which specific models are compatible or if the reverse works.

The bottom line is I would ask the manufacturer(s) before buying an eyepiece made by a different manufacturer as the scope and vice-versa.  To be on the safe side, it's best to buy the eyepieces that were designed for the scope you plan to buy.

This is a great question.

My understanding is as follows:

1.  Swaro body requires Swaro compatible eyepiece.  Current Swaro eyepieces will fit ATS/STS, ATM/STM, and older AT HD bodies.

2.  Leica body requires Leica eyepiece.  The new eyepiece (25-50 WA) is for the new body only.

3.  Kowa has many varied eyepieces, and some are only compatible with certain bodies.

4.  Pentax is cool in this area.  It will accept standard astro eyepieces, and the Zeiss eyepieces with the Zeiss eyepiece to telescope adapter.

5.  Zeiss is extremely flexible.  Diascopes are fully compatible with Zeiss eyepieces.  The fixed eyepieces and zooms (including the new 20-75/15-58 zoom) will work in Diascopes, old and new.  The Diascope also accepts a screw-on Zeiss brand astro adapter, so you can use any standard astro eyepiece, just like the Pentax.

Zeiss makes two astro adapters.  One converts a Zeiss eyepiece to the standard astro size, the other converts the Diascope body to accept astro eyepieces.

I hope that helps.

Howdy
