Hi:  first timer here.

I wear glasses, progressive lenses\trifocals.  I have a serious astigmatism.  What should I be looking for (if anything) when it comes to selecting a scope given the glasses?

Shann, maybe nothing.  If your trifocals are simply a result of excessive birthdays, then see if you can focus the scope without your glasses.   I need reading glasses but have never gotton use to bi/tri focals.  I got a pair of 0 prescription lenses set in a premium quality frame just for shooting protection.  But, I plink/target shoot a lot and it was worth the expense.  If you can focus one of your trifocal levels COMFORTABLY thru the scope, then just shoot with those.  FDA rules require all prescription lenses have pretty substantial impact resistance and in my (unqualified) opinion I consider them secure eye protection.

Shann.  Sorry, I just noticed your problem was astigmatism.  I was assuming farsightedness because of trifocals.  If it is serious, and the only reason you wear glasses, my comments probably don't apply.  You can still give my suggestion a try, but better would be to ask an optometrist (who is not too anti gun).  btw, I was pretty near sighted my whole life with slight astigmatism.  Then, I had cataract surgery in both eyes.  When they replace the lens with an artificial one they can also fix your near sightedness.  I can now see 20/20 right and 20/15 left.  But, they don't fix the astigmatism.  It is no factor when shooting although mine is slight enough I can't tell I have it at all.

Sorry, couldn't help it!   Roll on Floor Laughing

Seriously, just make sure you are set-up to look thru the same part of your glasses each time.  I have glasses as well and it sucks, even worse with binos.  I think a pair of glasses with big lens works the best.

You want the scope to focus at the point of the glasses.  Think  i>glasses<scope.  That may mean some mounting adjustments.

Buy your local eye doctor lunch. ;)

I have been using progressive lenses for about 10 years now and haven't had any problems with any scopes--but I only have acute near-sightedness and "short arms," not astigmatism. I would suggest going to a store and looking through some scopes to see if there IS a problem first.

By the way, I recently switched to much smaller lenses in my glass, and like them better. I can see just as well, but when out hunting they don't fog up as much when I'm hiking, due to more air circulation.

John, that is a good point, my tinee wenee lens don't fog up much.  But they suck when trying to mount a rifle and look thru a scope.  I always have half my vision looking thru the lens and the other over the top of the lens, which doesn't work very well.

I haven't had a problem so far. Maybe I have a higher nose!
