I see so many questions and answers but nothing about how important the eye relief on various scopes is .  There's nothing like that eye busting thump from a scope cranked up to full magnification in the woods . All you newbies should ask or check what the length is on the various models .... YES it is important !  Nothing like a 2 inch gash across your sighting eye to spoil a trip .   Too darn many good scopes and too many questions to add another but someone should mention it .

Agreed. How much eye relef is needed for big game hunting in the medium power class of rifles, say 30/06 family and medium magnums?

Some people like koshkin and me are "stock crawlers".

Fixed eye relief versus variable??

Eyerelief costs lots a FOV.

I cant see any reason at all to have exceptional eyerelief on a rifle like 30-06 as the optical costs for this is to high and the recoil to low.

Practice with the gun, correct stockfit is more important that long eyerelief.

Regards Technika

This answer to this question can only be determined individually.  I'm most comfortable with about 3.5" of eye relief.  Four inches starts getting long for me. I also tend to be a stock crawler.  I also believe stature, physique, and shooting style come into play here.  Also, correct mounting, rifle fit, and practice are important.

I have shot low recoiling rifles with short eye relief scopes.  Even though I knew they weren't going to hit me, it just didn't feel right having the scope that close to me.  One of these scopes REAL eye relief was less than 3 inches.

I look through as many different scopes as I can.  When I ask to look through someones shiny new scope, it has as much to do with how the eye relief works, and how the scope fits, as it has to do with other things.  For example, I really like the glass and the reticles in the Conquest series.  But the combination of the long ocular assembly and the 4 inches of eye relief causes me some problems.  But, they work perfectly for my Dad.  Go figure.

As a general rule, for me, I use a rifle with a 13 3/4" length of pull.  Any scope with around 3 1/2" of eye relief, and is mounted with the rear of the ocular tube flush with the back of the trigger guard, is usually perfect for me.

YMMV,

Steve
