I'm trying to figure out a mounting solution that will allow me to move one of my scopes back and forth between a short action Remington 700 with a varmint barrel and a flat top AR.
What I want to do is avoid having to remove the scope from the mounts when switching rifles, so the idea is to use rings on an extended rail riser like this:

I want to more or less duplicate the height of a LaRue or similar mount, which is right about 1". The problem I'm having is I can't figure out what height the rings need to be when combined with the height of the riser. This isn't helped by the fact that Weaver doesn't give an actual measurement to indicate the height of their riser or rings.
I have found one reference to the height of the riser that says it's .475". This of course leads me to believe that I need .5" rings.

Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Just for reference, the scope is a 3-15x50 with a 30mm tube.

Most Larue-type mounts are in the 1.4"-1.5" range.  So with that riser you'd need rings around 1" to duplicate.  I'd recommend .95" high rings as they should clear both rifles with a 50mm objective.

OK, maybe I'm measuring from the wrong place, but the LaRue mounts I have are about 1" from the mounting surface to the bottom of the tube.  Is that the right way to measure? Or should I be measuring to the centerline of the optic?

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, most ring manufacturers list heights to the center of the scope.  For a 30mm scope, this means you need to add .59" to your measurement.

This is the Weaver Riser with LOW TPS 1" rings. It goes back and forth between an AR flat top, to a Remington 700 with a 20 MOA rail.

OK, got it. That helps a lot. Thank you.

Hmm... That's actually different than the type I'm looking at. I guess the one I'm looking at is more of an adapter than a riser, because it's pretty low and has some forward throw. Check out the link I pasted in the first post.

I think this is the one I have.

I'm sorry. I thought these were close to the same. My bad.

No worries. I appreciate the response. A mount like that would work great, but I've got a LaRue handguard on the rifle, so I can't use anything that would have to span the gap between receiver and handguard. The ring is too big around.

Here's what I ended up with for anyone interested:
The base is a Weaver Tactical rail riser, and the rings are "High" six hole tactical rings also from Weaver.
The reason I switched to this configuration from a LaRue LT-104 SPR mount was because I wanted to have the ability to swap this scope back and forth from my bolt action gun without having to change rings.
This works out really well, because the combo with the riser ends-up being almost exactly the same height as the LaRue mount, while the rings alone are also the perfect height for the bolt gun.  Another bonus is that while it doesn't look as nice as the LaRue, it also doesn't look half bad!
I will eventually remove about 1/4" off the back of the riser so I can leave my rear sight on there.

Thanks!  I'm pretty happy with it so far. I wish I had done it sooner.
