Pair hunted after gunman kills 2 Florida cops Pair hunted after gunman kills 2 Florida cops

TAMPA — A police officer whose wife is nine months pregnant and a colleague who has four young sons died Tuesday following a shooting during a traffic stop. Officials say 31-year-old officer David Curtis died at Tampa General Hospital. Officer Jeffrey Kocab, also 31, died earlier following the shooting early Tuesday. A massive search was launched for a man and woman who were driving a red Toyota Camry. Police say Curtis pulled over the Camry because it didn't have a visible tag at around 2:15 a.m. He called for backup because the male suspect had a misdemeanor warrant. A few minutes later, police received a 911 call that the officers had been shot. Authorities found the officers lying on the ground. The male suspect is believed to be the shooter. "This is an unbelievable tragedy," said Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio, who burst into tears during a press conference early Tuesday. "Our hearts are just breaking. "It's just a very, very bleak day for us in Tampa," she added. "I cannot tell you the sadness that surrounds every one of us right now."

'True family man'
Iorio said Kocab, who passed away after being brought to the hospital, left behind a wife who is nine months pregnant. He joined the Tampa force 14 months ago from Plant City Police Department. Curtis had been been with the department for about five years. He has a wife and four boys between the ages of 8 months and 9 years old, the mayor said.
Curtis was described as a "true family man," by Jane Castor, chief of Tampa Police Department. Castor told the news conference that the officers had tried to arrest the male passenger "on what appeared to be right now a minor warrant." "As they put their hands on the suspect, the suspect spun around, pulled a firearm and shot both police officers," she said. Castor said they were hit in the upper body. A witness called 911 six minutes after the car was stopped and they were taken to Tampa General Hospital, officials said. Castor said the man in the car had not been positively identified but "we have a very good suspect." The police chief said she was "confident" both occupants of the vehicle would be caught. "We have officers out there right now, combing the neighborhood. We are doing door-to-door right now. This is a very, very active investigation," Castor said. "Every member of the police department is focussed on catching these individuals."

Helicopters
Anyone who helped them, she said, would "be sitting in jail right next" to the people responsible for the shooting. Helicopters, police dogs and dozens of officers were all involved in the search for the vehicle's occupants. "To have such a tragedy such as this is very difficult to deal with," Castor added. Police warned the public to be wary of the two suspects. "They're certainly a threat to the community," Tampa Police spokeswoman Laura McElroy told the St. Petersburg Times. "We know that we have two suspects who are armed, who are willing to open fire on two Tampa police officers."  A witness told the Times that she had heard four or five gunshots. Chris Arline, 49, said she was buying a candy bar at a nearby gas station when she heard the shots, which her son initially thought were caused by a truck. "That's not a truck," she said. "That's bullets."

Terrible news...here is hoping they find the suspects asap and bring down the full power of the law.

This is why we need to make sure we thank our LE and firemen more often. They have extremely dangerous jobs. Prayers go out to the families.

Just talked to an officer in Orlando who said the small warrant the guy had on him was for passing bad checks..... Went from being a crook to a murderer.

Thats insane. I mean what's the penalty for passing bad checks? They had to be up to something else. It's crazy to think they would panic that badly. I know it's happened before which just makes it sadder.

Read on another forum that the law had the shooter pinned in a nearby motel but I can't confirm it.

Hate to read these things.  Two families whose loved ones aren't coming home.  Pray no other officers are hurt in apprehending this bastard - as for him, maybe he will resist and save everyone the expense and bother of a trial.
