I am going to buy a scope for a Weatherby 300 Win Mag. The information on this forum has been very helpful but I have gone in every direction trying to decide on a scope. SWFA's recent price drop on the Nikon Monarch 3-9x40 ($218.00) has made that scope a very attractive choice. I believe this scope has a 3x erector system. I am not familiar with the internal operation and nomenclature of rifle scopes. On this forum references are made about 3x and 4x erector systems with the 4x apparently being superior. Why?
I would not consider this scope if the 4x erector is that much better. There seems to be some very knowledgeable folks on this forum. Can anyone elaborate. Thanks.

The erector just determines the variable range; a 3-9 is 3X and a 3-12 is 4X.  Higher number doens't make it "better"

NIce rifle.  Which model did you buy?  The NIkon would be an excellent choice, or for a little more money the Bushnell Elite 4200, would be my preference.  Either way, you can't go wrong.  I am a Wby. collector, MarkVs and Vanguards, love them both.  Let me know.

The rifle is a stainless synthetic sub moa. I have had it since fall 2006 but still no glass.

Great rifle, you will not be dissatisfied.  I own two Howas, who make the Vanguards and two Vanguards.  The most recent I purchased was about a month ago.  A standard Vanguard, Synthetic stock, blued, in a 300Wby. Mag.  All of them shoot like a dream, actions are smooth and strong and beat anything costing 200 to 300 dollars more.  I have a Sightron SII 4.5x14 42mm objective mounted on it and it shoot easily 1MOA at 100 yard with Wby. 180grain Nosler BTs.  Given the sale on the Monarch scopes at SWFA, which are substantially cheaper than all other vendor on the internet and believe me, I have searched all over, that would be your best bet.  3x9 would be fine, but spending just a little more for some extra magnification, given it is a 300win.mag. might be beneficial.  I hope this helps.
