Just bought a RRA LAR-8 today!Yippee. Does anyone have thoughts, or experience with one of these sights?I'm not a big hunter or competition shooter, Just looking to have some fun on the range or in the woods. I would like to do some longer range shooting down the road, but my budget only allows for 500 or so...
Any advice would be appreciated as I am new to the shooting community. Thanks

I used to have an Eotech on one of my rifles.  I liked the view through it and and prefer the reticle over the Aimpoints (although I have two Micros on rifles now), but there were some issues that led me to decide to go with something else.  The Eotechs can't really be left on for years like the Aimpoints can, which means you have to press the little buttons to turn it on;  that can be a problem if you need it to be on right now or in the dark or with gloves, etc.  If it's just for recreation or hunting, that's not a problem.  To my dominant eye, the center dot of the Eotech (and of the Aimpoints) looks elliptical one minute, like a star the next, like a horizontal line the next, etc.  For short-distance back-up sights, the Micros work fine for me, but a changing center dot makes zeroing and shooting with any accuracy at longer ranges very difficult.  You might see a relatively defined and unchanging dot, but you might want to make sure before you buy.  Some experienced, high-profile soldiers highly recommend the Eotechs, but some people have reported problems with heavy use.  Pretty much nobody has problems with Aimpoints.  Again, if the rifle is for recreation, that's probably not a problem.

Another issue I'm sure you've considered is the money/purpose side of it.  If fun is the only intent, there are other 1X electronic sights that are far less expensive.

I have the 16" LAR-8 mid-length and put a cheap 4x fixed scope on it. That package works well out to 200, but past that I personally need more magnification.

Which model LAR do you have? I don't think a 1-4x would be suitable for the Varmint model, nor would you need a 20x for the 16" middy.
