I'll just start with saying I didn't get an Elk on my first Elk hunt, but had great time.  I got to compare my Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14X50 #4 reticle to a Leupold 4.5-14X50 Mk4 Duplex and a Nikon Buckmaster 4-12X50SF.   On the bench they looked pretty comparible at 100yds but as we moved back the the Zeiss and Leupold started edged out the Nikon in clarity, especially 300 yds plus.  I felt like I could focus my Zeiss a little better at 300 (sharper image)than the Leupold on the range at targets but I had no problem with pararie dogs with either of them. I felt Zeiss and Leupold were really close the range.
Last light to about 10min past last legal light we put the Nikon up (I think one comment was: you might as well be looking through a paper towel tube). Considering its price though it's a great scope. We had whitetail deer in the field and the Zeiss #4 reticle was impressive. I could make out the legs of the deer and bracket the deer and felt I could have made a good shot out at about 150 yards with it.  I could find the deer with the Leupold but I could not always see the crosshairs.  I also felt the Leupold was not as bright and had a crisp as the Conquest, but that could have been that the #4 reticle allowed me to focus on the animal vs trying to find the crosshairs.
Overall I felt like the Zeiss was a little better the the Leupold. Mainly because it had a larger sweet spot in low light and I also liked the side focus markings on the Zeiss.  The Nikon did well, but I think I would opt for the Conquest or Leupold over a Buckmaster. Even for the price difference.  My friend who owns the Nikon is a big Nikon fan and said his Monarchs are better than the Buckmaster.  Wish he'd brought one to compare.

I agree with your assessment, in day light most reputable scopes in the $250 range hold up quite well to the alpha or near alpha glass. It's those last minutes of daylight that really tell the tail.
