Here's the dilema... I finally got drawn for elk this year in Arizona and I decided to upgrade my scope from a 4x Rifleman Leupy to something better. My budget is 250-300 and I have been undecided with these three choices...Burris Fullfield II x14x42, Nikon 4.5-14x40 Buckmaster and maybe a VX-I 4x Luepy. The rifle is a remington 700 30/06. I am soooo confused with which one to buy. Please help.
Thanks guys!!! |

phxccw.................Have you looked through them to see which one of the three, to your eye, is the better? I see that the the Burris and the Nikon are 4X14 variables. What about the VX1 Leupold? It appears you typed 4X only. I am not a big Leupold fan because you pay more compared to other scopes, which deliver the same or better quality. Between the Nikon and the Burris? I see your confusion because these two scopes optically, compare very well to each other. Trust your eyes........Too bad that the 4X16 Elite 4200 is out of your price range!!

I say NO to any type of parallax adjustment on a dedicated big game scope, but that's just me.

phxccw...................Whoops!...I forgot!!... The 3X9 Elite 4200 is not out of your price range. If you want the best scope on the market for the money, there is no better choice than the 3X9 Elite 4200! Do you really need a 4X14, when all of your hunting needs can be satisfied with a 3X9?......

Thanks for the info guys...I looked at the VX-I 4x12x40 and didn't really like it compared to the Burris and Nikon. Do you guys like the side focus of the Buckmasters??? |

3x9 could work...I really liked the 3x9 Burris but figured I should grab a 4x12 for magnification for the money. Do you disagree and should I run with a 3x9?

The 3x9 is the best all-round variable for hunting deer and pig sized animals on up.....I`ll take my 3X9 Elite 4200 in the field and do the same thing, on the same game, at the same ranges as a 4X12, a 4X14 or a 16!...On my last pig hunt, I took down a nice sow at 342 yards!! Don`t over scope your 30-06! Your higher variables will weigh more, are longer & may not look quite as good..........Be careful about getting more magnification for the money! Your 1st concern is getting the best possible optics, durability and construction for your buck! For $300 or less, no other scope will exceed the 3X9 Elite 4200 with its Rainguard, durability & construction! Compares exceedingly well the Zeiss Conquest; just as clear and resolute!..........

Thanks for the info, it looks like I will be making another trip to Bass Pro to look through the 4200 and then to check the prices here first of course. I used to have a 10x40 3200 on my M1A Scout and loved it...maybe I need to look at Bushnell again.

What about the 3200 3x9x40 w/ firefly reticle...I liked it when I looked through it today. What do you all think? And what about a 50obj instead of a 40obj?

How long did it take you to draw that Elk Tag?
The reason I ask, dont be afraid to go over your budget. Since you'd hate to have the scope crap out on you at the moment of truth!!! |

The 50MM objective will give you a slightly wider field of view & perhaps, only slightly, a little more light transmission....The 50MM`s are more money, heavier, with a higher profile mounted on the rifle. The 40 vs. 50 will not make any difference whether or not you are successful in the field. IMO, there is no increase in benefit going to a 50MM objective!.....The 3200, like the 4200, is a very good scope for the money. It still has the same Rainguard feature as the 4200, is extremely durable, is waterproof, shockproof & will do for you anything you`d expect of it. However, the optics on the 3200 are inferior to the 4200. The 3200 will last a lifetime & give excellent service.

That's not totally correct.
A scopes FOV is derived from the ocular, not the objective, Squeezer. |

How far away are the Elk you intend to shoot? There is a tendency to overscope (powerwise) for large critters.
IMO a responsible hunter (unless he is a USMC Sniper) will not shoot at an Elk at more than 300 yards (nor should that be necessary). When shooting an animal the size of a horse you don't need more than 6X and should you encounter one close up you want a fast low X scope. If you must have a variable, then a quality scope in the 1 to 6X range will work fine and you don't need a huge objective as that just makes the rifle top heavy and slow to mount. You can kill any Elk that ever lived with your 4X Leupold and use the $ you saved to buy more ammo to try shooting in real world conditions (not off a bench) at various unknown ranges. I just spent a lot of money on ammo for my 400 Whelen that carries a 2.5X Leupold Alaskan shooting out to 300 yards so I would know when the rangefinder said "250" exactly where the bullet would land. The result is a nice 6X6 in the freezer with one 350 gr X at 250 lasered yards using a deadfall as a rest. if you or your guide calls one into 25 yards and you have some monster scope, all you'll see is brown hair. Your thought on the Leupold 1-4 is a cost effective choice especially the one with the new "Turkey Plex" reticle as it will serve as a reasonable rangefinder as well. The "experts" may laugh.. but none of them have shot it in real world conditions and only a few have jumped an Elk in the black timber at 25 yards. Power...LOW. Mount...LOW. Congrats on that rare permit, get in shape as it tough hunting and best of luck as there are monster bulls in AZ. |

The field of view is effected by both the ocular and the objective, although in somewhat different ways. As a general rule if you see two similar scopes with the only difference being the objective lens size, a larger objective lens will typically produce narrower field of view. I know it is counter intuitive, but that is the way it works. ILya |
