I am assuming that in dark timber your going to be talking about close range shots and under canopy so low light performance is going to be paramount.  Magnification is not going to be a huge concern if the shots are going to be close.

Id look at the following:

The the smaller objective will still seem very bright at 6 or 7 power.  The magnification will be plenty for closer distances in dense trees especially for elk side game.  I have nver handled the Vortex (the brand is making a name for itself) Both the Leupold and the Swifts are nice I like the Swifts a bit better...Happy hunting

yes your are right about the conditions. It has some open meadows but for the most part it is ponderosa pine and aspen trees.

Thanks for the suggestions. the 8x42's are nice but a bit big to hike around with. above 8,000 feet every ounce counts

Original Katmai claimed Bk-7 newer ones are BaK-4.  Do not over look the Yosemite either.  You will find it almost impossible to seperate Katmai and Yosemite on image.  I hav a Swift Eaglet and it is a superb binocular.  I would also recomment you look at the Vortex Fury 6.5x32.

I'd say don't rule out the Katmai's even if they are BK7's.  They are significantly smaller than some of the others and are great to look through.

i was thinking about the fury's as they also offer a $50.00 rebate. But I have been hearing good things about the vipers. One thing that is hard in making the decision is I cant look through and compare. Anyone compare the Vortex Fury 6x to the Katmai.
