I am considering purchasing either New Nikon Monarch 4x16x42 or a Bushnell Elite 4200 4x16x50. Will the 50 mm objective gather much more light than the 42 at dust dark? Which has the better glass/optics. Which is the best scope. Just asking for opinions, all will be appreciated.

The 50m has the better ability for gathering light, but the magnification will determine how much gets to your eye.

For example A 42mm obj at 6 power will give an exit pupil of  7mm A 50mm at 6 power will give you 8.33 mm exit pupil. Since most people can only use around 7mm or less thats more than youd need. Simply divide the Obj size by your desired exit pupil and that would be your optimum power setting in low light. I'm not sure how the new Nikons compare optically to the 4200 Elite, but the 4200 is very nice glass.

Can`t go wrong with either one!.......But! I happen to be an Elite 4200 fan!... BIG SECRET!!!....Right boys???......I have just a little more trust or faith with the fully coated optics + the Rainguard that the 4200`s have. I am not sure if the new Monarchs are any different with regard to their lens coatings.....I would certainly look through them both and let your own eyes decide!............

I have several 4200's and they have performed perfectly mounted on kickers like a 300 RUM ( this one has a 50mm on it), couple of 300 Wby's, Marlin 45/70 and a 338 Win Mag.. Remember that with the bigger glass comes more weight , higher mounts, and bulk for a nominal increase in light gathering. Only you can weigh the advantages vs the cons here.

.I had a horror story with a new Monarch  mounted on a 30-06 giving up on holding a zero after few rounds from new . Issues happen, but Nikon was terrible to deal with. Go with the 4200's ..

What kind of reticle are you considering, Mike??

2 VERY good scopes. Nikon may have the edge in the reticle selection, if I'm not mistaken.

Do we need tags to go after skunks here, because in MT you can shoot them without any tags.

My 2-7 and 3-9 Monarch are made in the Philipines. I doubt the glass itself is.

The new Monarchs are assembled in the Phillippeans.  HOWEVER, the glass is Japanese.

Well the Monarch has great glass for the money. I tend to prefer scopes not made in the Phillipeans, Japan is fine.  I still think the 4200 is a slightly better scope anyways.  Prime must be confused again the topic was Elite 4200 vs Monarch  NOT over priced, over advertised over rated American Scopes

In the past week I compared several scopes 2 being the 4-16X40 4200 and 4-16X42 Monarch.

4200:  Pro's (to me)  Crisper glass.. Try to fog this one up, good luck I couldn't do it to any bothering extent. Very sturdy built but, not overly heavy.

4200:  Con's (to me)  Short eye relief...Lack of reticle choices.

Monarch:  Pro's (to me)  Long constant eye relief...Not great but better reticle choices...

Monarch:  Con's (to me) Didn't like the Made in Philippines tag... Glass wasn't as clear to the edges...CS history and confirmation of that here on OT... This one will fog, not easily but it will.

Although I didn't look through the 4200 with a 50mm bell, I feel the larger bell would have maybe enhanced slightly some of the positives.

Hope this helps

Rob

One consideration: the 4200 tactical has a 1-year, "no questions asked" refund protection from Bushnell.

I bought one, liked it; my needs changes, I shipped it back to Bushnell and had a check for 100% of purchase price in 3 weeks.

I'm sure the Monarch is a good scope, but I'd start with the Bushnell.  If you don't like it,. send it back to them and get the Nikon.

I'd buy the Bushnell

Optimus...............At it again? Ever been married?.........Try not to confuse a gold wedding ring with the gold Leupold ring. I know it`s hard sometimes, especially in your case!! Stranger things have happened, but in your case lies an exception.......Is there a preacher in your area that would utter the words;;;;;;;;" I now pronounce you,,man and scope?".................How appropriate for you!  An interesting wedding night too! Don`t forget to remove the scope covers!!!!!
