I have narrowed down my search to the SII 3-9x42 and the Elite 4200 3-9x40. This scope will be on top of an H&R handi rifle in 444 marlin. I like the slightly larger objective of the SII and it is about $50 cheaper. Is the 4200 that much better?

I have the 3-9x40 bushell 4200 on a .308 handi-rifle.  It is a very nice setup.  Don't let the 2mm difference in objective size influence your decision because you'll never even notice the difference.  I have two 4200s and they are very good for the money.  Good glass and well built.  The only thing I don't like about the 3-9x40 is the plex reticle.  Its kinda thin for me.  My other 4200 (2.5-10x50, I think) has a 4a reticle and it really helps at low light.  I don't think bushnell's plex reticle is any thinner than any other brand, its just that I'm used to the 4a and it really urkes me when I can see through a scope but can't find the crosshairs.

I don't have any experience with the sightron, but some people here seem to like them alright.

Both are good scopes.  Elite 4200 has slightly better glass.  Sightron has a little longer and more forgiving eye relief.

Elite 4200 has a fast focus eyepiece, while Sightron has the traditional fine threaded setup.

On a kicker, I would go with the Sightron.  It is generally a pretty close call though.

I'm  thinking you're going to be shooting not much farther than 200 yds at best with this cartridge. if I were scoping this gun, I'd go with the 1.5x6 Firefly 4200. Set at 2.5, this would be plenty for that 150 yd elk shot and give you at least 3.5 inches of eye relief. If a thin recticle bothers you as well, the Firefly has a thicker one that shows up nicely in low light w/o using the Firefly option. This scope can be had for $259 bucks right about now
