Based on the advice from this forum, I[ve decided on an Elite 4200 for my .243 Ruger MK77. For just over a $100 difference, what does the 2.5-10x40 offer over the 3-9x40 model? I'll mainly use it on woodchucks and coyotes. Thanks.

half a power on the low end and one power more on the high end.  Now on the other hand    once you make that hundred dollar price jump for a few cents more you can reall have a lot more scope with a 4-16 where you only loose one power on the low end and gain 7 power more on the top end.

The only one of the 2.5-10 that really makes sense to me is the illuminated model which would help if you are coon hunting after dark.

Great Advice I agree, the 4x16 on your 243 would be great. You won't be sorry. I have 4 Bushnell Elite series scopes. They are Good, Quality and dependable scopes. As a varmint hunter myself I use the 6x24x40 mounted on a couple of various guns. IMHO the range is great. You have both worlds the low end 6X that can be used for the larger varmints and the high end for  the smaller ones and also the high end is great for the target shooting side.

I have read 3-9x40 just became popular in the 1960's and that a 2.5-10x40 is superior for hunting. I would buy a 2.5-10x42 Nikon Monarch from SWFA

I don't think it offers a C note worth of difference and would get the 3-9, between the two.

For that price the Nikon has better glass imo and a side focus plus a mil dot, I think for coyote hunting the 4-16x42 Monarch would be sick
