Think I'll stick with the old balance scale a bit longer and spend ALL the extra money on scopes. Monarch just to try one........and a swaro just to have one lightweight top end model.

Also keep in mind that many benchresters feel that a consistent charge VOLUME is at least as important to accuracy as is charge WEIGHT, thus they purchase high-end volumetric meters such as Harrells, Redding BR-30s, etc. , and don't worry too much about a tenth of a grain weight deviation here or there.

here's a good check without a certified weight. Use a dime, it weighs 35 grains on average so grab a couple and weigh them if most fall around 35 grains I'd say thats good to go.   Thunbs%20Up

Disregard the swaro statement.....that 3x10x50 kahles CL looks pretty good for the bucks. Optics in the $1000 league but priced right above a conquest at $699. How can anyone say they can't afford good optics with deals like this?

A good friend had a electronic scale, but found it to finicky. Every time he breathed on the scale or someone walked in, the draught was enough to send the scale up and down the ladder. He got fed-up and tossed it out in favour of the balance scale.
I still use a balance scale.
To get a good electronic scale costs about $250.

Using my trusted old RCBS 5-0-5 scale and weighing 2 dimes, I came up with the following.
34.8gr. for one and 35.3gr. for the other.

Please send me a dime so that I can check my scale. Will everybody on this forum send me a dime and ask your buddies as well. I really need to check my scale and need as many dimes as possible to make sure it is accurate.
I only ask this because we do not have dimes in South AfricaWink

Hint: A troy ounce is not the same and a standard imperial/american ounce. One K-Rand is one TROY ounce of 22 carat gold.  A Canadan Maple leaf is one TROY ounce of 24 carat gold (.999 fine).  The Hungarian Phiharmonic is One troy ounce of 24 carat (.9999 fine) gold.  The American Gold Eagle is 22 carat gold, but contains one troy ounce of 24 carat gold. So ya know the reason for the price spread.

8-shots try a 1/10 gold K-rand. A Gold 1/10 is about the same size as a dime.  And ask for a 1964 or before dime to get exact measurements (90% silver) ;)

I now perplexed as I can not remember the weight differances between a 2 Rand coin and Sovereign, and a 1/4 ounce eagle or maple. The Sovereign is like .2384 oz troy, but I can not remember if the 2 Rand coin is the same. Which bugs me as I used to have one.

I shoot a lot of pistol, so the smaller weights and fractions of a grain are important. An extra half a grain can put you into kaboom with some powders in pistol.  Lyman has a check weight set.  I would highly suggest it.  You should see how much the Lee dippers vary from thier charts.

It was tongue in cheek Silver.......I weigh my ML'er charges to the 1/10 grain. I actually don't feel the electronic's are quite consistant enough for me. I couldn't resist it when dimes were suggested for check weights. Sorry if you misunderstood......

I tried using Kruger Rands, but they are so heavy the scale topples over. I cut one in half, still to heavy. Please send dimes!

I've got two scales, both RCBS.  The RCBS 10-10 is a very good balance scale.  I also have the RCBS Digital Pro.  Digital scales need to be checked frequently with the balance scale since sometimes.  If you don't know how to recaluate your scale once in a while, find out.
Also your scale should have come with a weight set for checking.  If you don't have one, RCBS sells one that's very good.  I might be old fashion, but I always check my digital with my my other scale just to make sure.  It only takes a moment.
