Does anyone have any experience with these ELCAN's?  I have read alot of good things and alot of bad things.  No in between.  Most of the good stuff comes from dealers, people who want one and people who just bought one.  Most of the negative reviews come from people who have never owned one.  Alot of negative comments about the base.

Is there any one who has actually owned and used one for any lenght of time.  How durable are they?  I never see any used Specter DRs for sale that must mean something?

A friend just returned from the Sand Box.  He's a hardcorps Mustang Marine.  Former Recon.

We discussed optics.  Here's a quote from an email he sent.

"For days sights we use the Trijicon ACOG, but I use an Elcan Spectre on my own rifle. Its the new sight that the Army SF and many USMC Recon units are switching to."

That's one real world opinion.

I bought one based on his recommendation and took delivery of it three days ago.  Looks real good on my HK416 upper.  Haven't shot it yet but it is certainly an imposing display of telescope technology.

  Thank you for that!
We really need you to keep us posted on how you like it after you've tried it out. There seems to be little information on them around this forum.

I've heard the negatives about the mounts being a weak point.

Well, I'm not the government so you can't expect me to go out and crash test it.  I'm too poor.  It will never get tested to the degree they do in combat.

I saw one for sale the other day for about $800.00 that had completed a full tour of duty on a grunt's rifle.  It looked like hell.  Looked like he had put it through a garbage disposal.

In spite of obviously VERY rough treatment, the glass was flawless and it worked like a champ.

I thought that was pretty impressive.

To give you my opinion ... at first blush ... it's very ruggedly made.  Of course the movable mounts are going to be the weakest point on the scopes.  BUT, with that said, everything has a "weakest point" and this aint very dang weak.

I am sure if I (or someone else) put their mind to it, they could screw it up royally.  I don't know if you run over it with an APC that it won't lose point of aim ! LOL !

Elcan, as a product name, is very well known for excellent optics.  This is my first product of theirs and can't speak to their other scopes.

BUT ... so far, this scope is the cat'z azz.

Judging by photos, the mounts look pretty tough to me as well. They must be more rugged than most scopes' internal adjustments at any rate...

I've heard reports that the glass quality is about as good as it gets.
I'd sure love to try one out sometime.

Here's the used scope I referenced. I am also including the owners statement.

"THIS ITEM IS USED! I have used this item the past 12 months in combat in Iraq. The Elcan SpecterDR (http://specterdr.elcan.com/) is built like a tank. I zeroed this site in March of 2008 and again in January of 2009, and the zero was still perfect and needed no adjusting. And this is after 11 months of abuse of combat and about 1200 rounds fired. As you can see the scope has all the wear of combat as well. The exterior is fairly scratched up, but the lenses are still crystal clear and all components still work flawlessly. The rear inclimate weather site also broke off (almost immediately), but can be replaced for a couple dollars. If you have researched these optics at all you will know that these are the BEST, and prices reflect that. If you can even find one of these, they usually run between $1700 and $2000. "

It would hard to beat that for an endorsement.

  I'd agree that's a good endorsement!
