Anyone used one? Thoughts? Practical for a SHTF go to AR? Would an ACOG, Aimpoint, something else be allot better for allot less? At almost 2K the Elcan is spendy.

My brother has used one in combat for years as a Ranger and a few of his of his fellow Rangers do as well. He said it's worth every penny, if you've got the cash that is lol (i do not). He started out using an EoTech (Iraq) and switched to the DR when the primary focus for his unit (2nd bat) became Afghanistan/Pakistan.

I'm just looking at a few options. Want something with a fine aiming point with some holdover points as well. If it weren't for that I think an aimpoint would be already on its way. Not interested in matching the drops perfect but with range time and some practice I should know what each holdover mark is distance wise and can use it.

I believe, off the top of my head, that they're all calibrated in either 556/762....

Yes they are but again I am wanting reference points on it that while they may be calibrated for something else I can learn how they would work for a different load/round.

I have a couple of these and while they're great optics, there are few things you should know. First, these things are HEAVY. They're roughly 1.4 lbs. It's a considerable amount of weight added to the top of your AR but the flip side is that you have both a RDS and a ACOG in one unit. I also have a Swaro Z6i 1-6x and with a ADM Recon-X mount, it's about the same weight but you have more top end magnification and every magnification in between. The SpecterDR can be only 1x or 4x. The Z6i is also SFP, the SpecterDR is FFP. The other option is the S&B Short Dot which is also a 1 to 4x and it's FFP but with the same mount, it's about 4oz heavier than the Z6i (with less magnification top end). With all that in mind, the SpecterDR is nice and short compared to the Short Dot and the Z6i.
The second thing to know about the SpecterDR is the eye relief is rather short. I have one of mine mounted in front of my BUIS and you have to really shoot NTCH (Nose To Charging Handle) for proper eye relief (and either 1x or 4x). Outside of that, I think it's a great optic along with the Short Dot and Z6i (which is why I have all three). All three have amazing glass. If I had to pick one, honestly, I couldn't. It would be a three way toss up... |
