Hello all,
I am a dummy when it comes to binos. I really don't want to research them either. I work security at a dam which is 3/4 of mile across and am watching boats/ house boats. I do look down river in a deep valley. I have used the nikon action 10x50 those seemed good  but Like I said I don't know anything. I want be able to read CF numbers on boats far away. my limit is $300 thanks for your 2cents Karl

How far away are the boats and how big are the numbers?

10 power binos are about all you can use without a tripod or some kind of rest and see clearly. I'll let others give specific recommendations, I haven't looked through a lot of different brands/models.

When I counted birds for a living I used a spotting scope mounted on one of those rifle stock looking things. It allowed me to read color bands on feathery legs that I didn't have a chance reading with the Leica 8 power binos I was issued. A long way of saying a shoulder mounted spotting scope might allow you the magnification and stable platform you need to read the numbers. Or if you don't need portability just use a tripod.

Do you get to watch sun-bathers when its slow? You might get a lot of eager volunteers to come help! haha

I wouldn't go over 10x either.  Reading numbers from much distance is sometimes not the easiest accomplishment.  If you were happy with the magnification of the 10 you had, I'd stay there.  I think it is a mistake to try to crank up the magnifiication in hopes of seeing more.  By the time you add extra image shakle (higher magnification magnifies motion too) and add moving targets of boats moving or bobbing over the surface, more than 10x might be a disaster.  Strangely enough the motion deal may make it easier to see what you need with 7-8x.  There is a reason why the standard naval observation binocular is 7x50.  A steadier image is easier to see than a shakier larger one.

At your price limit, I'd go with a Zen Ray ZRS HD or a Theron Wapiti HQ in 8x or 10x and not look back.

Should you decide to go the stock mounted spotter as mentioned above, I'd certainly stay with 20x or so.

BTW, welcome to OT. Smile
