I'm going on an audad hunt in january and need to buy a new scope for my winchester model 70 30.06. What scope model would you guys recommend for this, price is not really an issue here but I would like to get a scope that compliments the gun nicely. Its only a $300-$400 gun so I was thinking of getting a scope in the same price range, is this typical or do you guys usually spend more on your glass than the rifles worth? Also I was wanting something in the 40mm size.

Most often it's advisable to put your money mainly in your optics.  You can't realize the potential accuracy of the most accurate rifle in the world if you put poor optics on it.  Whereas an average to good rifle can be made to outshoot the more accurate rifle if you put your money in superior optics.

As far as spending more on optics than on the gun.......... Depends on how much the gun is worth. I have a fairly certain amount that I spend on scopes no matter the price of the gun. That is the price range of the optics that work that I lke. Price of the firearm has no bearing on what I would spend.

Leupold 6x42 FX-3 Riflescope Long Range Duplex Leupold 6x42 FX-3 Riflescope
Stock # - LEU66820
  • Matte
  • Long Range Duplex
  • 1"
  • Xtended Twilight Lens System
$429.95
Add Leupold 6x42 FX-3 Riflescope to Cart
I recommend this scope a lot for a hunting scope and I have one of the 6x42 with the heavy duplex but the two dots below can be used as a balistic reticle for longer distances so zero the center X at 200 and expect the top dot to be 300 and next to be 400 and the point where the bottom post gets heavy to be 500 yds.  When you are shooting at those distances you need some system to accurately hold over and you need a rangefinder.  The Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 is even better glass but you only have two marks the center which should be 200 and the point where the duplex goes thin to thick below center which you will have to check to see if it is around 300 or 350 or 400 it will be somewhere in there so if you go that route test it on the range to see what that point gives you.  You really cant go wrong with either of those two scopes.  Also worth consideration is the 6x42 Super Sniper which has tactical knobs and you can dial in correction for trajectory compensation or you can have Kenton industries engrave knobs with yardage on for your bullet combo.

Thanks for the info guys I really appreciate it, I'm a novice shooter at best so I don't anticipate taking shots much over 200 yds, I've been primarily a bowhunter for over 10 years so I'll have to get back into form, gonna have to get to practicing.

Mad Just got my zeiss conquest 3X9 you guys suggested in the mail and the elevation click stop works fine but the windage adjustment does not work correctly, it does not click when turned clockwise (just spins) and doesn't always click when turned counter clockwise Head Banger, WHATS UP WITH THIS!!!, so much for a quality, the el cheapo's I've bought at wal-mart worked better out of the box. Anyone else ever heard of having problems with a zeiss like this, this sucker is getting sent back for a full refund tomorrow.

Are you sure that the Windage knob is not pulled out to the released position for resetting the knob to zero? I have 5 Zeiss scopes and they are all the boss. One is 90 years old from 1920.  If you bought your scope from SWFA just give them a call and I am sure they will make it right. They are the best to work with.

Give 3_tens suggestion a try . If that isn't the problem then by all means return/ exchange it. While I can certainly understand your frustration the conquests are actually very nice scopes and unfortunately you got bit by that one in ten thousand exceptions that exist in every manufacturing process. If you like the scope I would definitely consider exchange as they do have a reputation for being excellent scopes. Sorry you got bit.
