My first post!

I need advice on a scope for a DPMS LR-308. I understand the optical basics (exit pupil, eye relief, objective lens dia, reticle etc.) as I also dabble in astronomy. However I really could use some direction due to the huge array of scopes available.

Mil dot or not? Why? How about a scope calibrated for 308? Fixed power? (I understand fixed power has optical advantages) What power? Obviously a 10X40 provides a decent exit pupil. Is this 10X enough scope for such a gun? At what distance does a 10X scope become difficult to use.

I could use some good advice.

I plan on range shooting at mostly below 300 yards. However there is a 600 yard range I visit. I also have access to private and public property with hog and deer hunting. In addition to this, I have remote personal property (I visit twice a year) with a nice valley to target shoot across. I guess it varies between 300-400 yards.

The LR-308 is not a super expensive gun and as such, I do not expect to spend absurd money on a scope that is way beyond the rifles (and my) capablities. Looking for a good deal, of course!

Thanks,

Franklin

I think if you were paper punching a fixed power like the Super Sniper would be a great choice. It would look really cool on that gun, too. You want to hunt game and I think a good quality 3-9X40 would do you good service both on game and on targets. Regarding reticles, I use mostly plex types and have one dot. I never use the dot for hunting. Other guys here will hopefully help you with the different reticles, maybe ranging in your case.

Welcome to OT!

Well, I have read all the customer reviews on the SS. It seems like a deal I just cannot pass up.

Now, which one? Rear or side adjust? Why?

You can't go wrong with the ss.  I just bought a lr-308 and put on the ss 16x4, and I couldn't be happier.  Here it is

So, I purchased the SS 10X scope along with some Burris tactical med high rings. It works very well and is quite easy to use. The optics are very good, considering the cost. While you would not confuse this scope with a 2000 dollar unit, the resolution is quite similar! Color rendition and low light performance is slightly below the performance of a 2K scope. The scope complements the LR-308 rifle well, stays on target and the adjustments are repeatable. The only issue I had is the rings come loose from the rail after 100 or so rounds when torqued to spec. A significant overtorque is necessary to keep it from coming loose. Loctite helps too.

My buddy has the same LR-308 as I do, and he has a Leupold top shelf scope. I truly match his performance in every way, for 1/4 the cost!

I like the idea of calibrated knobs. I may try this next. However, for my typical range shooting, they really are not necessary.

The one thing I might suggest at this point is when you can afford it switch to Badger Ordnance Rings - they are the best available and worth the added cost.

Don't overtorque! Loctite should do it.  If you can't lock them in at spec torque, toss them and get something that does what it should.  Badger is the way to go; costs a little more, but worth every penny.

And calibrated knobs are worth the time, money, and effort - espcially since they do not require much.

Thanks for the tips. I have a machine shop, so making some "proper" bolts to clamp this thing with, won't be a problem. I recently made some titanium stepped studs with different threads on each end for a custom turbo setup. The ring bolts, by comparison, are simple things.
