I narrowed my choices for a 8x56 illuminated reticle scope down to a Docter or Schmidt & Bender. Ive heard that they use the same lenses and coatings, does this sound right? Has anyone compared the 2?  It wont be on a big recoiling rifle, so I dont need big eye relief or strength, just best at night. Has any one compared the Docter scope with the Schmidt and bender?

Docter is Aus Jena (sp?) one of the old Zeiss WWII plants that was in the eastern zone.  They are no longer a part of Zeiss, that does not mean they do not buy Zeiss stuff.   S&B normally does things in house for maximum quality control, including grinding and coating, which is why they charge extra.

CR500, I have no experience whatsoever with Docter scopes, but I can tell you that S&B owns its own lens manufacturer, and no other scope manufacturer uses their glass or coatings.

Is Docter even still in business?

Yes, Docter is still in business. I think the new company name is Analytik Jena. They have changed their importers here in the U.S. Merkel U.S.A. is now the official importer. I wish I could have gotten in on that !
