I noticed that you can pick up a nice set of Docter 10x42 binoculars for about the same price as the Pentax DCF SP 10x43.  Does anyone have hands on experience with either or both of them?  How does the Docter rate against the Pentax SP?  How does the Docter compaire to say Minox or Kahles?

I have a set of Minox and the Docter seem brighter at twilight and early in the morning. I don't notice any difference except in low light. In fact I'm not sure they are as bright as the Minox in the daylight. I felt the low light was a better measure. I lost a Zebra because I couldn't pick him up in a Burris scope at dark. The Schmidt and Bender my friend was using made him stand out like a sore thumb. I must say in Burris defense that the newer scopes are much brighter.

Docter vs Pentax

The Pentax is brighter and shows better color in full daylight, and has a flatter field.  The Pentax also has more CA.  The Docter really shines in low light, where much more detail is visible.  The Docter has a better depth of field and very low CA in the center field.  The Docter has edge distortion on the outer 20 to 30% of the view.

Take yor pick.  I'll take the one better in low light conditions for hunting, while the Pentax would be a little better for birding.

Rustier than Thou.
