I'm starting to get into long range shooting/hunting and I'm wondering if I need to get a scope with either a side focus or adjustable objective.  I'd like to shoot out to 1000 yds.

It is not essential for long range shooting. Parallax error is in fact a bigger problem at shorter distances (inside 100yds). That is why top airrifle shooters use a parallax adjustable scope for 25meter and less shooting.
If you can afford both the magnification and parallax adjustment, way to go.
If you need to economise, rather buy good glass and magnification and forget about parallax adjustment.

Parallax is definitely a issue with long range shooting, but it depends a lot upon the accuracy level you are searching for.

Here is some info on parallax http://www.opticstalk.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=5026

Read all the posts in that section several times and you should have no more questions about parallax.  Chris has given us an excellent learning tool with all the info he has posted.  Everytime I read it I learn more about it.
