I've been reading reviews of the Millett DMS-1 scope, and I'm not so sure about it. Some reviews seem great, others not so much. Can anyone give me a definitive answer as to the DMS-1's quality? Or what about other scopes out there in the DMR category are worth looking at without spending a thousand dollars? Say $500 or less? Is that possible?

I want to be able to hit steel targets at about a maximum range of 600 yards. Mildot or some other sort of range finding reticle would be a plus.

 Your suggestions are appreciated!

millets are exactly what you say, a gamble, some are decent (notice i didnt say good) and some are very very bad.  That said for the gun its going on,M1A, you need something durable and proven. What other purpose will this gun serve besides ringing steel?

In my opinion the best DMR scope out there is the SWFA SS 3-9X42. Some pass it by because they want more magnification. You don't need more for a DMR, in fact more power calls for a parallax adjustment and this is not needed in a DMR and will slow you down or fowl you up if it is left in the wrong position. I own two of the SS 3-9X42, one is on a M1a NM and the other is on a LMT MWS. I shoot steel out to 800 yards with both of them. The top photo is 500 yards with the M1A (this photo is a finalist in the SWFA photo contest if ya want to slip over and give me a vote, hint, hint) and the next photo is 700 yards with a 7 1/2" group. The scope used on the LMT in the second photo is not the SWFA SS 3-9X42, rather it is the SWFA SS 1-4 HD. This illustrates that higher magnification is not needed or even desirable in a DMR scope.

Hmm I just might have to pony up the extra cheese and get my claws on a SS 1-4...

I also like the compactness of the 1-4x scopes. They have to be lighter than a full size scope, and that would be a good thing in my book.

I would look at something like this: http://www.leupold.com/hunting-and-shooting/products/scopes/vx-r-riflescopes/vx-r-2-7x33mm/ for a DMR scope. I think 2-7 is a great range for a DMR style scope and the ballistic reticle could be great for quickly taking shots at range without having to adjust your elevation manually.

At about 2X the price of the 3-9 is the IOR 2.5-10x42 with illuminated Mp-8.  I own both, I like both, there are few times when the illumination is really needed - but when it is, it really is.

Be advised, the IOR tunnels from 2.5 to about 4X, so it is really a 4-10X.

If I had to rate both on a few key metrics, scale of 1-5, 1 being terrible:

Glass: IOR:5 3-9SS:4.5
Turrets: IOR:3 3-9SS:5
Eye box: IOR:4 3-9SS:4.5
Reticle: IOR:5 3-9SS:4
Build: IOR:4 3-9SS:4.5

Illumination is really the differentiator.  If you NEED it, it is worth the extra $$.  The vast majority don't need it.

For those who don't know me, "5"s don't come easy.  A rating of 4 on a specific feature is pretty damn good.  Both scopes are quite good.  The SS is balls-out reliable, I ain't quite so sure of the IOR.

I own both, I like both, and will buy more SS3-9, I might buy more 2.5-10IOR.
