I have read through the FAQ here, but is there any good threads on the correct or technical ways to evaluate optical quality ?

All I know to do is these tests :

I put up a newspaper at 100 yds, and try and read it to test for resolution and clarity.

I also see just how late toward dusk I can read the same newspaper to test for low light ability.

I look semi towards the sun's direction to test the washout effect.

I look at something with fine lines and detail to test for edge clarity.

And lastly, I look at something colorful that is a long way off to test for true to life color.

The reason I am confused is because I have recently purchased some Mueller scopes that are easily the equal of my Vari X III, Elite 4200, and Weaver V16.  This just does not seem right considering the Mueller scopes average around $150 each.  I can easily see where other inexpensive scopes fall short when doing these tests, but the Muellers seem just as good as these much more expensive scopes.

Any help with this ?   Thanks

Don't know if you've read this or not.  It may not be exactly what you're looking for but there's  LOTS of  info on scopes.

For me it's much like you described I simply look for clarity and if my eyes become tired quickly, as you have found the Mueller's have a clear edge to edge quality especially the APV, now will they withstand punishment of other brands simply don't know because I treat my optics with care. I look for products that I can afford and use with comfort. Each person will have a different opinion as they look through a
scope some are very brand loyal and see what they wish.

Wow ... great reply and insight. I tried to completely forget brand names while I was coming to grips with the Mueller. It is just so hard for me to really imagine a scope like these being as good as $400 - $500 scopes.

Just wondering... your "current location" doesn't match some of your earlier postings.

If you read ILya's blog on optical quality, it can answer many/most of your questions.  No sense in my mind for rehashing what he covered pretty darn well.  Some things to note,  a 20 page tome would probably not answer all the questions one could ask on quality, and even in mass production runs of scopes, glass quality can vary.  "Lots" can vary significantly within a quality number... so if you get the good end, you'll will see noticeably better quality than someone who got the "bad end".  Most will fall somewhere in the middle and most people could not see the difference.
