I have an older Pentax S5i and a little newer Pentax Optio 10.1...

I am looking for a camera that I could take some through the scope pictures.

Also looking to take fast action pictures or as best as I can get for say $300 or so.

I would like it to have a rechargeable battery and be somewhat compact possibly feature a Macro Fx and have some other sort of Timed Multi Shot mode...

It would be hard to beat a Panasonic lumix. They are a repackaged Leica only $200 less. Super sharp pictures. I think Ted has one too. Mine is the ZS 3 about 3 years old. It has over 200,000 shots on it.

I just bought a Olympus TG610 and if you are looking for a camera that you won't be afraid to take out in the elements (waterproof, freeze proof, and shockproof) then I would recommend this camera.

With PnS camera's I used to promot Canon but after my daughter purchased her Panasonic lumix and I saw some of the pics she took I was extremely impressed. I started to do some research along with recommendations from both RifleDude and ILya... I bought one. Now Panasonic is my go to camera for the PnS platform.

Yup, the cameras themselves are identical. The only differences are the editing software that comes with each and sometimes the warranty is longer on the Leica cousin. Panasonic's supplied software is more than adequate.

Having worked in the digital imaging world for most of my career, I may be able to offer some insight.

1) Unless you like old-style rangefinders or you are a pro photographer with very specific requirements, do NOT buy a Leica camera.

2) Panasonic cameras are not repackaged Leicas.  Quite the opposite.  Panasonic point and shoot cameras do not have anything to do with Leica other than the fact that Leica occasionally lets Panasonic use their name.  All point-and-shoot Leica cameras are Panasonic cameras with different cosmetics and bundled software.  You end up paying a few hundred more for that.  Not a good deal.

3) In the point and shoot world, in my opinion, the two strongest players right now are Panasonic and Canon.  However, saying that Panasonics cameras are good (or that Canon cameras are good) is kinda like saying that Bushnell makes good scopes without specifying which product line you are referring to.  There is a huge difference in quality and performance between different models.

Before I make any specific recommendations, 338Lapuaslap, do you have photography experience? Can you offer a bit more detail about what you are going to use the camera for? what are you taking pictures of? in what kind of lighting conditions? at what distances? are there size limitations?

ILya
