I got a used Nikon Monarch online for a great deal, got it today to realize it had a bad enough scope ring mark to the point of a dent.

Optics still appear clear, windage and elevation adjustments move freely as does the power ring.

Is this an optic that can be trusted and assumed more of a cosmetic blemish or is it worse?

Only way to know is to shoot with it and test the adjustments and see if it holds zero.  if it does you can always rattle can the thing to make it look "less worn"

Have owned 26mm tube scopes previously mounted in 1" rings (by mistake) and scopes with hefty dents, as long as everything moves freely it shouldn´t be a problem. If the damage is near the turrets it can be fatal (have owned that type of scopes as well Wink)
