Walking along a sluice cut into the mtn side by gold miners looong ago, me and my buddy get near these cliffs to our left when I happen to look up and theres a swaybacked 10pt at the top of the cliff and a few does, now Buddys all excited since this old buck doesn't even know we are there and its lookiing all "life insurance commercially" has a nice proud stance right along the edge of the cliff above and its rack looked like 2 old oak trees. Buddy decides to take the shot which is just short of vertical, figures he would hit it just behind the right front leg and probably come blastin out its spine. Boom he fires, but not having any experience in a vertical shot like that he missed its body and hit it in the head and dropped it nearly at our feet, a good 60ft drop counting a bounce of two, ooops rightside rack is missing, musta broke off because of in the fall. No problem enough left to make the tag requirements. He's shaking from the adreneline babbling a mile a minute and kneels down to hold the head and 1 tree rack in his lap, lays his 300 weatherby agaist the rack to show everything off for the camera i'm pulling out, ooops, sudden movement of his "prize" he screams and jumps back and lands on his arse in the rocks, a snort a shake and up leaps the buck and off into the woods in what looked like a world record bound. I'm laughing so hard I almost pass out. We decide to continue on the sluice cut with little hope of finding that same buck, I pick up the camera out of the dirt and grab my rifle. Buddy takes a long drink of Gatorade and is ready, "where's my rifle" he says....you got it....we were both so scared, surprised and trying to get out of the way that we never noticed it was still slung on the bucks antler and neck and he had taken off with it. After retrieving the other antler, it was clear that the bullet struck it at the base and knocked the buck silly and off the cliff landing at our feet with the wind knocked out.

So if someday you come across a majestic one antlered buck armed with a 300 weatherby, don't be to surprised.
