How many of you guys have used a scope that has come from the factory with a dedicated turret or reticle?   Scopes like the M-223 or M-308 from Nikon, Leupold Mark AR scopes.  I get several folks that ask me about them allot.  My buddy wants to put a Leupold Mark AR on his bolt gun and is convinced he can just slap it on and it will be perfect drops and turret will match up fine.  He doesn't listen to reason about MV, BC and other factors but its his money.    Just curious if anyone had used one on a bolt gun and if so what results you experienced.

I've used a number of BDC scopes.  In general, they ALL have to be calibrated by shooting.  It is a "science project" to discover the "caps and lims" of any BDC scope.  I won't say you CAN'T just stick it on and start shooting "dead on" with it... I've seen it/experienced it (to some degree), but the odds are against it.  To fully "calibrate" a BDC scope it usually takes me a couple of boxes, sometimes more, of ammo.

I habe an ior that is turret calibrated to 55 grain fmj at 3200 fps. Out of my 16" they are notimg going that fast but out to about 400 yards its mighty close. A few yotes have found that out.

My train of thought is to get a scope with a turrent thats generic an make a drop chart and such or get a scope that can be fitted with a kenton industries knob.

Yeah its preference. The bdc to me is a fixed drop, but I shoot to fond out what distance those drops happen at. Dedicated ones will be pretty close but each rifle will have a spread anyways.

To me it really doesnt matter what the bdc is meant for, I just pick the reticle I like and make it work for my rifle.

I've used many (custom turrets or "calibrated" turrets - "calibrated", translated  from the Greek for "almost correct."
I have also used custom turrets, they work well if it is your data and nothing changes.

Let the guy get it.  When it doesn't work out, get a lightly used scope for a big discount.  After you buy it, say "I told you so."

Edited for spelling.

It will only be perfect if your barrel on the bolt is standard length and if you use the exact ammo as described on the turret. I have that exact scope and love it but it I didn't get the dial for the ammo as I wanted to run different makes through my rifle first before I ordered the custom dial. From Leupold it comes set up for a .223 caliber but you can order another one that is supposed to be tailored to your brand of ammo and caliber, which in my experience is very close as Supertool has explained it does the job.

Depends on the level of the shooter. For most shooters they are a real problem solver. Up the level of the shooter and they usually have something else in mind anyway. Most POA/POI problems can be solved by changing the velocity of the round if you are a handloader, or change the power of the variable, (of course fixed powers don't apply). Given a target size of an A Zone hit (8-11 inches) there are really only about 3-4 basic ballistic profiles that fit most trajectories. Most can be "fitted" by just changing the sight in range.
