I recently purchased a '68 Winchester Model 70 and a '71 Interarms Mark X Mannlicher that I would like to put period correct scopes and mounts on.
Bausch & Lomb, Leupold, Weaver, Bushnell and Redfield were the most popular brands of the period. I see various vintage scopes listed for sale but no one ever nails down the Manuf Date on these. Is there a source to verify serial numbers? I jumped in feet first and bought a scope I believe would be period correct for the Model 70, a Bausch & Lomb Balvar 8B 2.5-8 variable. My limited research found the scope model was introduced in 1968, the first of line with internal adjustment via turrets. Here is the scope. It looks near-mint. Do you think this was a good choice? |

They were good scopes in the old days. Certainly the proper vintage. They were the first scope marketed by Bausch and Lomb that were made in Japan instead of Rochester, New York. They were Bausch and Lomb's first internally adjustable scopes.
Go shoot a deer!

Make me an offer LOL! It arrive a week or so back and it looks even better in person. It could pass for new. It is going on a brand new 1968 Winchester Model 70 I found. Honest to god, brand-new unfired. What a gem, push feed or not! Cool thing about the scope was it was introduced in 1968 as the first B&L Variable scope with internal windage and elevation like modern scopes.
I also just picked up a mint '67 Remington 700 ADL also. It is in brand-new condition save for a small scrape along the edge of the cheekpiece that was a 10 second touch-up with a stain pen. I found an equally mint earlier Bausch Balvar for it which would require the adjustable mount. The mount was in mint condition but really looked antiquated like it belonged on a pre-war rifle. I opted for a mint Bushnell Sportview 3-9 with a 32mm objective. It's a bit more modern but has the vintage look. I found a mint set of Vintage Weaver, large thumbscrew rings and will install a set of modern bases. I thought it would be cool for my son and I to go to the range and shoot the rifles I grew up up around.

I had a Bushnell Sportview 3 X 9 X 40 with AO back in the seventies. I put it on a Sako 270. I always wanted to get a "better" scope but the rifle shot so fantastically I didn't want to put a screwdriver on it to touch the mounts or the scope so I just left it on and it shot freaking amazing!
