Trying to understand custom turrets like the Kenton and the turrets you can order from luepold.  It seems you have to pick a specific load at a specific altitude and always use it for the life of your scope if you get these turrets or am I looking at this wrong?  If I get it made for my 300 win mag shooting 180 gr nosler partitions at 2900 fps at 1000 feet elevation, then how off will it be if I change to 180 gr accubonds which have a different BC?  I understand that if I have it set for 1000 feet elevation then it would hit about an inch high at 300yds hunting out west at 8000 feet elevation.  To throw even more in the mix, I have almost 1000 rds thru my rifle.  What happens when I rebarrel it?  I am thinking about going with a different rate of twist like an 11 rather than the 10 that barrel from the factory came with.  Very possible that the velocity will change when I work up a load for it but it might only be by 50 fps.

Are you just suppose to buy new turrets when something changes or will the differences be negligable?

What scope do you currently have?  I ran the KI turrets on my Burris Black Diamond on my 300 WM with 190 gr bullets, and they worked great for me.  But I was sighting in at 4500 feet and hunting at 6000 to 9000 and usually could to another sight in at the hunting camp if I wanted.  The downside to the KI knobs I had was that you had marks for 100 and 50 yard increments, and nothing else.  Wasn't a big deal, but there were times where i would have liked more.

Now I am running a SS 5-20 on my 300 and just print out a couple charts for my gun.  I usually sight in for 300 yards and basically don't have to adjust unless I am going to shoot at 450 to 500 yards.  What I like about using the knobs that came with the scope is that I can dial in mils exactly (or think MOA for MOA scopes) versus guessing with the KI knobs.

If you make a chart for different elevations, you can check you zero and go from there.  And if you change rounds or barrels, you can print new charts after you develop and test.  The biggest think is practicing at all ranges you want or think you might shoot at.  Regardless of you chart or knobs, practice is the only sure way to hit at the ranges you want.  The knobs and charts make it easier, but neither are exact due to changing temps, humdity, winds, elevations, etc.  If you practice in all conditions, and do you charts, you will be successful.

Just my opinion having gone both ways.  Both have nice sides. Just comes down to what you feel comfortable with and want to learn to use.

In many cases, the trajectories of multiple loads will be close enough for a BDC or ballistic reticle to work unless you are in target competition.  Let's say the trajectory of your second load is always within 2 inches of the one your BDC was made for - that's not going to make much difference hunting big game.

Plug in different loads in a ballistic calculator and you may be surprised how close they are.  I was just doing this for my Garand the other day, comparing M2 ball (152gr, BC = .405, MV = 2800 fps) to Black Hills 155gr match (Hornady A-Max, BC = .435, MV = 2900 fps).  Come ups from a 100y zero are identical for both loads out to 400y, 1 click apart at 500y, 2 clicks apart at 600y, 3 clicks apart at 700 & 800 - I probably couldn't hit anything that far out with irons anyway Wink  The point is that the Garand elevation drum is basically a BDC turret calibrated for M2 Ball, but for all practical purposes will work fine with other loads (probably most I'd actually want to shoot).

I mostly agree.

I ran a Kenton turret on a Conquest on a 300WM (190-gr at 2900FPS) for awhile and really liked the ease of use.  As ranges increase, I noted a little more variance than I prefer.  Out to 500-600 yards, you will be fine (assuming your initial data is accurate.)  Beyond that, be ready to be off by a bit.  How much "off" you can accept will determine how go a deal a custom turret is.

In the end, I got rid of the custom turret and went back to a kestrel and a good ballistics program.  There is no free ride.

Leupold turrets use an average temp - average elevation - BC - and FPS. I have used my VX-3 in temps ranging from 70+% to 14 below with a turret 32% average with nothing but drop in its tracks results. The marks on my turret for the vx-3 are 10 yd intervals while my mark AR is at 25 yd they work great. I will never go back to a scope with hold over points, dots, circles, slashes, hashs, or what ever ---CDS is just range - dial - hold dead on - done and puts the fun back in hunting. All of my hunting is DIY fair chase spot and stalk shooting off hand(no benches, tripods, or prone shooting).

The turrets are only 50 bucks from leupold so if you say --- hunting the high country for a good trophy hunt well worth the purchase of another turret.

As far as ammo change I had 600 rounds of ammo made for my rifle with all of reloading info on file so that is not an issue.
