I'd use Keiger or Shilen first.  When you are doing stuff, don't just ask if the are good, ask if they are great. ;)

Well I do not want to spend over , say, 1,200 on a custom rifle and these guys supposedly make rifles based on a Savage action starting at 650.00 and up to around 1,200.. I know nothing about getting a rifle built, thats why Im asking. These guys make a rifle called the VII in many flavors. Has anyone ever had a "GREAT" rifle built by E.R. Shaw?

E R Shaw has been around for years making good barrels for all kinds of rifles.  Reasonable.

Gunwriter Jon Sundra is big on ER Shaw.  They aren't in the upper echelon of custom barrels, but they do reportedly make a good barrel.

Julio, I saw the same rifle your talking about in various mags, though I have no experience.  Give a call and have them price one up for you, I'd be very interested in the results.

Let us work at this from a differant angle. What is that you *REALLY* want this custom rifle to do?  If you don't build with a real purpose then it just become a money pit quick.   A rifle or about any gun can do only one thing REALLY well and couple of other things pretty good.  Depending on how much money you are willing to spend it falls off pretty quick after that.  What is your mission statement for the gun?

Well its pretty simple really, I want a 7mm-08 in fluted stainless barrel, a bolt repeater that can shoot under 1" groups at 100.. I would like a nice synthetic type stock, quality not one of the ones you tap on it and it sounds like cheap plastic, which is what it is....I will probably just buy this Cooper , please see example, only I would prefer stainless

AJ works with a friend of mine.  His day job is building sniper rifles for the Navy.

http://www.hartbarrels.com  They do things installed.  So the gun is "blueprinted as a aprt of the cost.

Fluting looks kool, but adds to the cost.  Pick the right conture and you can put that money into something else.  One of the questions you should ask is what percent of thier barrels do they reject?  Ask if they straighten barrels (that is a reject!), if they do ask about thier match grade barrel.

Also you are getting a CUSTOM gun, then the stock should fit you! Ask questions about how they are going to get the stock to fit you.

30/06 is on the left, 280 Ackley Improved on the right. Both based on the same case. The Ackley has a sharper shoulder and it is moved forward as well. The Ackley has less taper in the body as well. You do this by fire forming the parent case in the new improved chamber. You get slightly more velocity (75-100 fps on average) and you get longer case life if you are a reloader.

The rumor mill has Cooper making a new short action model 52 that is due out soon. That will take care of your 7-08 woes.

This was the email response back in April.

"The short action Cooper Firearms rifle will debut this fall, in .243-.308 family of cartridges. As to the stock styles, we haven't decided which will be offered first. But the new action size will be on dealer shelves this fall, so check back periodically.

Take care and thanks again,

Parker O Ackley was a famous gun smith back in the day. P.O. as he is better known as, took a lot of common at the time chamberings and did what  he called "improving" to them. the general performance increase which Roy mentioned, was pretty common results. some people thought it was worthwhile and in some instances it was. now a days we see all sorts of "ackleyerized" cases out there. Basically all your doing is bumping the shoulder forward which changes the angle of said shoulder. you take the .280AI (one of Roy's faves) and it basically performs at a 7mm mag level. while its not a dead ringer for the 7mag its very close. if you were to do a seach on ackley improved chamber reamers you would see a pretty big list of them, all the way from the smallest of cases all the way up to the big boys.

Roy,
Im going to save up and buy this rifle in a 270 and load em on the lower end. The barrel will be a 24" stainless, not 23" like it reads. It will come with a full 1" Pachmayr Recoil Pad instead of that skinny thing its got in the pic. The barrel and bolt both with have a twist and it will shoot 1/2" group with the proper hand loads....The ONLY thing I do not like is the action is Push Feed and they tend to jam up if you do not do everthing perfectly. Check it out- JF
