I am in the middle of a custom Mauser sporter build in  7 x 57. Actually I am nearer the end of the build but that is a long story. Fairly high end components on this build in terms of barrel, action and beautiful California claro walnut select blank.

Looking for some recommendations for the glass.  My smith recommended something like a  2x-7x variable.  Primary duty will probably be eastern whitetail deer at 200 yards and less (often 75 yards).  Stand or walking. Price is not my primary concern as this is a one of a kind custom rifle build that has taken a ridiculous time and will be handed down when I am pushing up daisies.

Some options from low to high in price. I would look used if condition were very good or better.

 Leupold VX-3 2.5 -8 x36

Zeiss Conquest 2.5 -8 x 32

Swarovski 1.5-6x42 Professional Hunter

Swarovski 1.7-10x42 Z6 (maybe used)

Swarovski PH 2.5-10x56  (but not sure if I want that large of an objective)

Zeiss 1.5-6x42 Diavari VM/V

Zeiss 2.5-10x42 Victory Varipoint (again maybe used)

As a hunting rifle in middle caliber I would probably want  some form of duplex or German 4 type reticle.

Thoughts?

I'd throw these into the mix to.  I lean towards the lower mag range for the distances your talking.

This rifle is just crying out for that 1.5-6 Zeiss.

I was thinking sort of the same thing.

Zeiss Z6 or the Swaro in that lower magnifincation. Trim, classy looking  European alpha glass optic sort of compliments the custom mauser sporter build.

My uncle is a custom gunsmith and is the builder. Like all "family" projects it is last on a crowded bench lined with Purdeys, Hollands and assorted London Best Guns.  I probably have $1900 invested in this so far (over 10 years) before considering the glass and mounts, etc. So what's another 1500, right?!!

It will get used. No way it stays a safe queen.

My twin sons can duke it out over who gets it when I am gone. Kind of a unique family heirloom made by their great uncle.

I have the Zeiss 2.5-10x42 Victory Varipoint scope on my Custom Mauser '98 7x57 with the #8 reticle. It is a superb scope.

I think a lot of people don't consider balance when selecting a scope. The above Zeiss is optically brilliant but is only just small and light enough not to make my rifle top heavy and unbalanced. It would not be suitable for a mountain rifle.

I would recommend you consider the weight and dimensions of your rifle when purchasing a scope. A well balanced rifle is a delight to use but one that is top heavy is tireing.

Sounds like a wonderful choice.  I would also consider the Trijicon 1-4 with the 30mm tube with the green illuminated #4 reticle.  The other scope I would consider is the Fixed Power Leupold FX3 6x42 with long range duplex or if hunting low light the heavy duplex.
The rifle as described does scream Zeiss or Swarovski but I really like the Trijicon illumination ;
