Hi,  am looking for a little advice.  I just dropped all the parts off at my gunsmiths for a Custom Rem 700 Bench gun,  Weighs 18 pounds without optics. Anyways Its no where near a competitive gun I just like heavy guns.  I have been looking at the SS's and have always steared toward leupolds.  I think on this one I want to try a SS but not sure which to get,  the 10x seems popular,  but I want to shoot 1k and beyond with this gun.  Its a 7mm Rem mag,  I usually shoot with 10x,  and alot of people say that the mirage will kill you on a 20x xcope,  any thoughts on that?

Thanks

8X32 Nightforce benchrest or Leo 8X32X50.Mirage can be handled iwith these magnifications if you can shoot "down" to the target at this range. A slight shooter elevation does wonders.

Everything is better in the 10x. If at all possible stay with it. A standard rule of thumb I always use is. If it's less than 1K yards go with the 10x. If you're dealing with ranges further than 1K go with the 16x. Since you said "and beyond" the 16X should be enough. The 20X is just too much.

I disagree-- you have made this entry in the target forum therefore I assumed you will be shooting targets. If man sized a 10X will get you by, but remember you can always shoot a 8X32 on 10 or 12 power, but a 10X will never give the resolution an occasional 32 use will offer, and if you are precision shooting, and it sounds like the gun you are building could do it especially if you are handloading, a higher mag. is a must to get the full potential from your gun. The eye relief of a high variable on 10 is probably not as much as on a straight 10. Eye relief on a Leo variable at 10 is probably as much as on a less expensive 10. Also mirage is a function of air density, and ambient air temp. differential. It is more severe at lower elevations, (more severe in Texas, than say a high plains western state) at the same day time temp. Your location of shooting may play decisive role.

I have a SS20X and it works well with some problems with flair - sunlight striking the front lens. (buy the lens shade if you buy the 20X)  I do find that it is too much scope for most of what I do. Seems to work well with the heavy clunky .223 rifle I have it on:

Having said that I hate .223 I love .308  30-06 and 300WM  and I love Long Range Mark 4 Tactical Leupolds.
