I know this is a popular question, so I'll ask my slant on it having read through several other threads already.  I have an AR15 223 that i'm looking to do some dog hunting with.  I have a Vortex StrikeFire red/green scope right now.  Range is decent up to 100 yrds.  With the terrain that I'll be hunting, it's fairly hilly, wooded and I don't anticipate many 350+ yrd shot opportunities.  Wondering if there's a better optic that gets me good 100-350 range with that rifle?  Budget would be around $200.  Thoughts?

thanks!

I am about to pick another one of these up to put on SBR until  I can swing for the ACOG I want, then again I may end up leaving this on there if it works how I hope it will.

'Dog hunting', as in coyotes, not prairie dogs? I sorta assume coyotes. To me the 223 isn't the best, longer range coyote gun, though it works fine for coyotes. Unless you are on a frozen lake or the farm fields, coyote shots are usually close in the Midwest. I do realize that can vary widely. That said, we often use shotguns coyote hunting.

I don't like going with the cheapest scopes, I also like matching optics to the rifle. No reason to put a scope the size of a telescope on a compact rifle. For hunting I'd be in the 2.5-8, 3-9, or 4.5-14 pwr range for the 223.

If real long range shooting is expected, I'd use a 243.

The combo SVT recommended is a sweet setup.  I put it on my M&P 15-22 trainer as a temporary optic until I could pick up a SWFA 1-4x or 1-6x.  I'm pleased with the setup and have shot steel plates at 200 yards with it.

At this point, I'm going to leave it on my trainer.  Very good optic for the price.

At us in Russia the coyote (dog) call a jackal. We streyat in it from a distance 300-400 meters.

Close don't leave in a visibility range.

For such distances I don't use the AR-15 (Vepr

- 15/

Russia) I shoot a dog from the Tikka T3 varmint 308 Win. Dogs at us very large. Harm, big from them.

I would advise to spare no expense on a trunk! Still important, I will tell very important to have good optics. I use Nightforce NXC 22x50/NPR-1.

Very good optics. The best in the class!

Thanks!

You can save on a good carbine and optics. But you will lose on a good shot. You shouldn't save on it. Having spent excess 300-500 dollars, you save them on shots in the purpose, during a dolgov of time using and having invested this money in a good thing!!!

I have a Leupold VX-3 illuminated 1.5-5x20mm on my AR. Last spring my last yote I thought was 100 yards away was actually 149 yards and although I nocked it down, I had to follow with a couple shots (pulling the trigger a couple more times is actually more fun).

After that I got the SWFA SS 3-15 (with another Bobro mount) as I wanted the FFP to aid in verifying the actual distances. Now that deer hunting is over, and when this deep freeze ends, I'll be hunting with it and my FoxPro. Smile
