I want to get a scope for my .223 savage 12flv. the price range is between 300-500 for the scope. So far this is what i have found. Nikon monarch, bushnell elite 4200, millet, konus, and the sightron SII.

Could you please rate best to worse and tell me why you think one is better than the other? I plan on getting custom turrets once I have a good load worked up so i plan on using the windage and elevation adjustments alot and want my scope to hold zero as best a possible.

Thanks for your time.

i can give you feedback on 1 scope, bushnell elite 4200 1.25x4x24, i owned this scope for a year, just sold it today.  the scope fit my ar well, it was very clear, i was able to shoot both eyes open at 1.25 if this matters.  at night i could see pretty well with just moonlight, overall no complaints.  i sold the scope because i wanted higher top end magnification and have wanted an ior scope for a long time. i don't have the technical knowledge on scopes like some of these guys, but i hoped this helps on one scope.

I have an Elite 4200 6-24 with the side focus, mil dot reticle.  Love the scope, no complaints at all.  Has served me well.

Recently ordered a Monarch 4-16 in the low 300s brand new, with side focus, 8421 model.

I have a Nikon Monarch 5-20x44, very clear, good adjustments however have the "Plex"
crosshair and it is thick, I use on a Model 12 savage 223 and shoot pretty consistent .500
groups at 100 yards despite the crosshair.

I can not comment on the Konus scope, the Millet I can tell you I'll NOT buy another one. I've got the upgrade to the 4200 and love the thing. The nikon would also serve you well.

Bushnell 4200 would be my first pick than the Sightron SII,The Nikon Monarch is a nice scope but from my personal experience would limit it's use.The S2 Big Sky is an upgrade to these other scopes and are in $300-$500 price range.

The Monarch and Elite would be my first two choices of the scopes you listed.

But I would agree with Tip69, take a look at the Zeiss.  I would buy the Conquest over the Monarch & Elite.  The glass seems brighter and crisper than the others, especially in low light or high magnification.  The Zeiss reticle is also nice and dark with no wash-out or funny coloring in bright sunlight.  No issues whatsoever with W/E adjustments either.

This one would fit your budget, and the #4 reticle is quite nice:
Zeiss 3-9x40 Conquest Rifle Scope #4 Zeiss 3-9x40 Conquest Rifle Scope
Stock # - 5214609904
  • Matte
  • #4
  • 1"
  • Etched Glass
  • 2nd Plane
$499.95

For a standard plex reticle and less money, you can get this outstanding value:
Zeiss 3-9x40 Conquest Rifle Scope Z-Plex Zeiss 3-9x40 Conquest Rifle Scope
Stock # - 5214609920
  • Matte
  • Z-Plex
  • 1"
  • Etched Glass
  • 2nd Plane
$399.95
