As some of you know from reading the "Firearms" section of this forum, I bought my son a Ruger Hawkeye Sporter in 300 Win Mag. I have a 3-9x40 Conquest laying around that I am thinking about mounting on it using the Ruger rings that come with the rifle. My question is do you think the Conquest is the right scope for her and what do you think about using the Ruger rings for this mount?

Sam

  HEY,Sam,
A VERY GOOD all around scope.  As for the Ruger rings, since they switched to torx head screws I have no problem with them at all.
A GOOD set up in a GOOD chambering!

Should be fine and dandy. FWIW, Burris makes some nice rings for Ruger's (if you end up wanting something different). I just put some on my wife's .308 Compact.

Ruger rings are great to use. The factory supplied rings are "medium" in height. I always do an exchange with Ruger for the "lows" This will put your Conquest wonderfully low on your rig with just a smidgen of daylight showing between barrel and scope. Perfect!

Thanks bricat, should I get both rings low for my Ruger Hawkeye or is one supposed to be low and the other medium or something like that?

Use the shorter of the 2 rings supplied on the back and just buy a low for the front.

This is correct. If the ring is still unopened in the package, just send it back to Ruger for an exchange.

Nothing wrong with the ruger rings. I used them on my 300 win mag until I went to a 30mm tube.

I recently had this same problem, I tried to put a SWFA 16x42 on a Ruger and with 30 mm tube I needed diffrent rings and so I went on ebay and searched and found a weaver kit that allows you to use any rings you want and there easy to install.

Just curious, does Warne make QD rings that don't need bases for the Ruger Hawkeye M77 and if so are they as strong as the Ruger fixed rings?

Don't know about the quality but they are available.  Warne site shows #1R7L(med.)  and  #2R7L(high) for the Hawkeye available in gloss, matte, silver.

Thanks Earl, I'm just wondering about how they would hold up without bases on a 300 WM.

Found these two reviews that may help.  Old but...................

Precise OD rings for Ruger at last!
Date: August 6, 2007
I really like the Warne QD Ruger rings. I have them on my M77 magnum .458 lott with a Leupold VXIII 1.5-5 power scope. I am very impressed with these rings as well as the other Warne products i own. They fit and function flawlessly. I believe they will be great for quick changes in shooting conditions such as dangerous game so often dictate. I will be taking this combo to Zimbabwe for Cape Bufallo 8/08.

Warne Ruger QD Rings Repeat Well

Date: April 1, 2007
I have used these rings on Rugers in 338 Win, 375 H&H, 416 Rigby, and now on a 375 Ruger Hawkeye. They are strong and nicely repeatable if mounted with care and tightened very close to the same torque every time. I also have a set on a Mini 14 and have had the same results.
They are easy to mount. Tighten well to the receiver, then tighten the rings to the scope.

I just noticed that this Conquest is a 38mm, mine is a 3-9x40mm do you guys think she will fit with Butler Caps on my sons Hawkeye using low Ruger rings and how about working the bolt, maybe I should stay with the mediums?
Thanks,
Sam

Finally the Hawkeye Sporter arrived with factory rings. The rings size are 4KHM an 5KHM. According to the chart (see below) this size will work for a 42mm and my scope is a Conquest 3-9x40, I can't find a size for a 40mm. The next size lower is for a 32mm obj would that setup be to low for my Conquest and how about bolt clearance and Butler Creek lens caps clearance? BTW, is the rear ring always taller than the front?
Thanks,
Sam

There's probably no way to determine if the low rings will work with your rifle without trying them with the butler creek caps on.  I would try the mediums first.  It would be really really close as to if the lows would work, but I bet they would.... maybe.  Big Smile

Thanks ckk1106,
BTW, this is a left handed rifle for my son so I'm a bit unfamiliar, does anyone know if there are  different rings for left handed rifles or are they the same for both left and right handed actions?
