I have a benchrest gun I've converted over to varmint duty...primarily squirrels at 400 yards and under. It has 1-hole accuracy all day long and deserves a quality scope, but my self-inflicted budget is sub $900. Seems to me the Zeiss conquest and Sightorn SIII fit what I'm looking for best. But I' haven't been able to look through or "feel" either. I have a feeling I can't go wrong with either.

For me, remaining sighted after rough car rides and elevation adjustments is key, and of course optics quality is always important. Easy and comfortable magnification adjustment is huge for me, as I typically locate targets on 6X and then zoom all the way in for the shot.

Sounds like most people give the Conquest a slight edge in optics quaility. But, I like the greater magnification range offered by the SIII, but it's $75 more expensive and I'd have to get new BAT 30MM rings.

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Maybe I needed to simplify my post...

Which is all around better, Conquest or SIII?

I have only messed with the conquest in stores, and never fired with it so I can not give you a glass comparison. However I feel the SIII is superior in every other way. The difference in adjustment range alone should be enough to take it over the 6.5-20 conquest. I believe it is listed at having only 45 MOA total adjustment, which is woefully insufficient for any shoot at range. My 6-24X50 SIII has 107 MOA.

The reticle (MOA-2) and turrets are also excellent.

I have not compared it's glass with a conquest, however I have compared it with my Nightforce F1 and SS 5-20. I think it is significantly better than the F1, and just a tad bit better than the SS. For whatever reason, the F1 just doesn't get along with me. The reason why I would choose it's glass over the SS is contrast and color rendition. The two scopes has comparable resolution, however the SS's color rendition is flat compared to the SIII. Not a big deal for target shooting, but if you're using it to spot for targets while hunting, it's enough to make a difference.

For me, it's a no-brainer between the two. However I have no field experience with the conquest. The adjustment range alone however should be enough to go with the SIII. If you were asking about the 2.5-10 conquest vs 2.5-10 SIII, that may be another matter, however I am of the opinion that the high magnification Conquest is unuseable due to the adjustment range.

I currently own the zeiss 6.5 -20 and love it. It's on my beanfield daytime deer gun.
My buddy loves high magnification squirrel hunting. One thing you have to understand is They have to be perfectly still to hit. We like to sit in a spot and call them in with a squirrel buster call.
My buddy found that out in our famous Squirrel Stampede of 2000.He had a 6-20 Bushnell Elite and had a hard time hitting those running critters ! We must of had 20 squirrels come running over a hill at us and take to the trees once we started firing. I will never live to experience that again in my lifetime.

I have a Zeiss 6.5-20x50 with a RAPID-Z Varmint reticle on a 204 Ruger and I really like it.  It gives me the flexability to hold over/hold off or crank the knobs.  The glass is very good although I can't compare to any Sightron scope.

I didn't see what caliber your rifle is, is it a flat shooting cartridge requiring less internal adjustments?  I maybe wrong but most, if not all, 1" high magnification scopes will have significantly less internal adjustments than their 30mm tube counterparts.
