This will be for a light weight hunting rifle in .260, probably with a rapid z 600 reticle which works well with the ballistics of the bullet I'm using. The 3-9 is only a little lighter because it's longer, but the price difference is pretty significant. Any opinions on why the 3.5-10 would be worth the extra money?

For a small and light caliber hunting rifle, I would think that a 3-9x40 Conquest would work just great.  I have a .257 Roberts, FN rifle on which I have a 2.5-8x32 Conquest and it works fine as a 300 yard max deer rifle.  I have many other scopes but for deer hunting, I mostly have used 3-9x40 scopes for the past 50 years of western deer and elk hunting.  FWIW.

Should be a winner.  I have owned (2) 3-9x40 Conquests (my kids have them now) and liked them.  Good luck with that.

The 3x9x40 is almost always the better deal.

Well it turns out I got a good deal on a 3.5-10x44 with rapid z 600 on the sample list, only a bit more $ than a 3-9 and less than an oz. heavier. Plus, I'm not counting on it but maybe will be able to get a rebate as was brought up earlier.

The Z plex reticle in the 3.5-10 model has a much wider plex than the 3-9x40 model meaning that there is much more space between the outer bolder posts in the middle of the reticle.

I think you did very well, better than by going with 3-9.  I'm not a big fan of 3-9... I do have a couple and use them quite successfully, but always end up wanting a little bit more on the top end.  1-10, 2-12, 3-21... those are ideal ranges for me.  Personally, I've always thought we needed to demand more from the optical design community rather than settling for what is easiest and has the biggest profit margin for company bottom lines.
