OK, here goes.  I have narrowed this down to 3 models, all 3 in my price range and plenty for what I am going to need it for.  These 3 are all that I am interested in.  No conquest or leupies or meoptas.

Kahles 1"       3.5X10X50 American
Swarovski 1"  3X10X42  AV
Nikon  30mm  2.5X10X50 Gold

I deer hunt in AL, but do not need to be able to shoot at night (completely legal here) and will do some (very little) hunting out West for elk, mulies, whitetail.  I will be mounting this on a Tikka t3 lite 30-06 or a Sako 85 30-06.  Help me out here, please.

Is the kahles and swaro with the 1" that much better than the Nikon with the 30mm and 50mm objective?  I wasnt sure if the kahles with the 50mm would be better than the swaro with the 42mm and if it was worth the bulk.

the 30mm tube doesnt give the nikon any advantage other than maybe more internal moa. as far as performance the 30mm tube doesnt give any advantages.

i would take the swaro, and im sure you will hear a lot of other members tell you that too.

The Nikon is not in the same league as the other two!  Are you looking at new scopes or used?  If new, and not taking in account how much they cost, I would recommend the Swaro, partly based on the Kahles situation.  If you are looking at used, then either the Kahles or Swaro will make you happy!

The only difference with regard to the objective bells is that the larger one will allow you to use a higher power and still have great low light performance, other wise, no real benefit!

thx.  i am a nikon guy, so this is my first venture 'up the ladder' for a scope.  i have read that Kahles is made by swaro, but wasnt sure of the 'glass' differences.  The swaro 3X10X42 will probably be my choice, I was just looking for some confirmation and advice.

thank you very much!

for me at least, I don't see much benefit in PH compared to the AH.

it's justified by some...... those that buy the PH, but not for me.  I don't need a 30mm tube for one thing or the first focal plane reticle either.  From what I understand, the lenses and coatings are the same and that's what is most important to me!

I'm a BIG TIME Nikon leg humper, but I'd dismiss the Nikon out of the running between those 3 also.

Ditto on Swaro.  The AV line is really nice.  I have a Z6, which is very nice, but too expensive IMO...unless you shop on the sample list.

Hey skywalker...(I deer hunt in AL, but do not need to be able to shoot at night (completely legal here).  Didn't you mean ILLEGAL?
you can hunt possum and coon at night with a .22, and foxes and hogs with dogs, everything else is "daylight hours ONLY".
Just trying to clarify.
As for scope, you have some very good choices.  You need to figure how much you want to spend on what level of quality.  Personally, given your choices, I would save a few hundred more dollars and go with the Swarovski.  I came close to going with Kahles recently, but due to internal company issues, decided not to.  I think caution is justified for a while... see how things shake out.  Even though I believe in "buy American", you can never go wrong, persona opinion, with Swarovski.  They have a rep of excellence for a reason.
