I have owned both.  The Japanese (Light Optical Works) scopes are great scopes......basically the equal of my Elite 4200 and significantly better in low light than my Vari-X-III's.  The old US made Ulitimate Illuminator was a sheep in wolves clothing.

I have an old 3x9 redfield its a good american made scope. Ive killed alot of deer with it over the years. Personaly, Id prefer it to anything that comes out of china. Quality and durability is an uncommon commodity these days.

I have a couple of the Golden 5 Stars.  I'm guessing they are similar to a Nikon Buckmaster.  At the time I bought my 3-9X40, I thought it was better than a Vari-X II - that's why I bought it.
