Hey folks,

I have yet another rookie question:

If I decide to use a scope that is 3-9 x 40mm, how close can I aim and shoot?

For example; if a varmint is 30 ft. away (or less), can I get a clear shot using a scope with these specs?
I'm wondering what the minimum distance requirement may be for a scope rated at 3-9 x 40mm.

Thanks!

sure, i use them down to 10 yards when i use them in the woods, and i have no problem, and finding the sight picture isnt as hard as you would think, becuase you point it, and then align the crosshairs properly. it however, wouldnt be my choice for running shots.

Inside of 30ft, on a moving target, you are probably going to see a blur of fur.  I took out a javalina shaped/size target and measured out 30Ft.  At 30ft, I do not forsee a problem on a stationary target, I could see the entire target.  At 15ft, I could see all but the head and tail end.  Inside of 15ft it was just a big ball.  This test was done with the scope on 3X.

What type of varmint hunting are you referring to?

Thanks for the replies. I'll be doing a lot of target practice (mainly at 50-300 yards) with an 8mm Yugo M48 Mauser. However, I have been having problems with a beaver
chopping down my trees and he needs to be dropped. I would rather blast him then have to buy or make a trap. Otherwise, I don't really do much hunting. I'm just a Mauser lover
and enjoy shooting as much as possible.
