newcomer here. I shoot a Thomson Center Pro Hunter in 308. Have a 3-9x40 Nikon Pro Staff. Am looking to bring my deer in my scope closer. Recommendations on a new scope please. ThanksLoco

Welcome, Tony.

1) Anticipated shooting scenarios?
2) Budget?

Agree.  answers to these questions will be helpful because many times closer isn't necessarily the answer.  The nikon pro staff is a good budget scope, but it's not in the same class as an older Zeiss Conquest in 3-9X40.  The difference in clarity and the crispness of the image make a world of difference without sacrificing light transmission.  In other words, if you get a higher magnification but you get it with crappy glass, you still won't be satisfied, but if you get better glass with the same magnification, you might be happier.  Lots of variables based on the questions CT asked.  Welcome.

Also keep in mind that, all things being equal, more magnification means more narrow field of view.

Better glass always trumps more magnification.
Always.

I agree with that, although I like the SS 3-15 so much it's hard to make up my mind to switch to the SS 3-9 HD. The glass on the 3-15 is pretty darn good. Sometimes I think about really trimming weight off an already-light Tikka. Then the 5 fewer ounces of the SS 3-9 become more appealing. I'd probably do it if I took the barrel down to the 16-18" range. That would make this .308 more of a 0-300 rifle anyway.

Always and forever each moment with you
Is just like a dream to me that somehow came true
And I know tomorrow will still be the same
'Cause we've got a life of love that won't ever change and

(Chorus)
Everyday love me your own special way
Melt all my heart away with a smile
Take time to tell me you really care
And we'll share tomorrow together
I'll always love you

Forever, forever

Ah....Heat Wave nails it once again.
