I have narrowed a search for short range optics to 2:

Bushnell Banner Dusk & Dawn 1.5-4.5X32mm (Wide Angle)
Nikon Prostaff Shotgun 2-7x32mm

The Nikon seems to have a smidge better clarity, at least at "indside Bass Proshops" ranges and lighting, but I am drawn to the field of view and fast acquisition of the Bushnell.

Basically, I like the Bushnell better but don't want to spend too little.

My experience with woods range optics is limited to a 20 year old Bushnell Sportview ~1-4 and a Vari-X III 1.5-5X Leupold.  I bought a second Sportview for a shotgun 15 years ago, and it died during the first range session, so I want to avoid that scenario.

The gun is a mild mannered 7x57 98 Mauser sporter.

Can't speak for the Banner line but I have had very good performance from this Bushnell:

Same power range, good field of view for bush.

The 3200 Elite is a reliable optic with Rainguard..

The Weaver V Series is a bargain with excellent optics and a reliable reputation..

With regard to the  Bushnell Trophy ..Have a camo version on a 12 ga Mossberg 835 turkey gun for 3 years now and it's been without issues ..

In regard to the Banner, the Prostaff will be a better scope for lowlight, and woods hunting. The Trophy is online with the Prostaff.
A step up to the Legend would be worth while, as it is just below the 3200 line glass wise.

I know you never asked, but in my opinion the best budget prized scope for the kind of hunting you describe, is the Nikon Monarc Gold, 1,5-6x42, German #4 reticle  ($599,- at competitor ).
Mine sits on a Ruger M77, 338 Winmag and is exellent for close work and longer shots.
The x42 objective gives plent light gatering in dusk and dawn and dark timber.
4 " eye relief and 30mm tube make it a dream to use.

Martins recommendation of the 1-3 Weaver would be my first choice in that price range. The Weaver will have the better glass.

...........................The better variables for close range deer hunting are the 1x3`s up to the 1.5x5`s in the straight tubed scopes.

Sure! You can use a 2x7 obj. belled variable, but your quicker acquisition and aiming speed will come from the lower powered variables, which have the wider FOV`s, that is much better for closer range hunting.

The lowered powered 1-3x20 Weaver V3, 1-4x20 VX2, 1.5-5x20 VX3 are excellent choices and better imo, than a 2x7 for the shorter range work within 150-200 yards.

If close range is what you want, get the Weaver V3 and don't look back.  It is available most of the time for $140 and is a bargain! It will take the recoil as one on my 12 ga slug has done for years.

Doh!  Well, I bought the Nikon 2-7 Prostaff.  Should have waited a day to read the newer recommendations.

Sightron SII 2-7x32 survived the recoil of over 1000 rounds of 460 s&w mag.Plenty of eye relief on 2 power and brighter than the Nikon Pro staff & Leupold.
